anyone here ever have any luck catching the bay surf able i think with a strong north wind the bay would have some soild semi clean wind swell
I haven't looked or been out htere when there was a big strom or nanything coming through but I was out fishing this one time out on my boat neat breazy point and this huge tanker came by. He must of been goin to fast or somethin coasue he was creating this huge wake they was forming up but wasn't breaking. it was sick cause it was like wallin up for like a mile I wish i had my surf board, but instead when the wave got to my boat it rocked the sh*t out of us.It was like 6 feet too.
the chesapeake bay does get waves on a strong NE/N wind. I've heard several reports of this in the past.
I have surfed it at about 8 foot and perfect toobs. It was during a huge hurricane in the 90's and the OBX was maxed out as was VB.
Fishermen's Island Check out Fisherman's Island on www.wannasurf.com, it will show you the point from google earth, looks pretty good, but only breaks when everywhere else is really big, from what I hear anyway.
I'm talking about swell generated form the short amount of fetch in the chesapeake bay, not from the ocean. Yes, it happens on a N/NE swell.
well in general the oceans gonna be a lot better, its only on those rare days when vb's maxed out or too choppy would i even check chx
I rode some sloppy yet peeling waves just east of the Choptank River Bridge (Malkus rt 50) in Cambridge last year. 30-35 mile an hour west wind created knee to waist high wind swell. As the wave came under the bridge the began peeling on a shallow bar on the south side of the river, the bridge embankment blocked most of the raging wind. Only recommended for the desprate surfer.
Just today I saw a couple of breaks about ankle high out on the western side of the bay. Watch out for rocks, it seems like the places that are breaking could ding your board. The breaks i saw looked like they would hold up well during a storm.
for the last time ive posted this information about 5 times now. But I'll put it out there again, cause it seems no one is acting upon it. There are many places to surf in the chesapeake bay. The bay bridge tunnel is the only one i have heard mentioned that actually breaks, but the truth is that if this spot is breaking, somewhere else in the bay is breaking way better. On those massive maxed out northeast swells, you have to head to hampton. Dont go to ocean view pier, that place sucks, find this place a little north called grandview, there is a jetty with a nice large house on it that will be offshore and barreling on any sort of north wind and good sized swell. Just look on google earth how to get here, cause its a lil tricky, but well worth it. Its like right next to a state park or something like that. There are also a few point breaks around this area on huge north east swell, if you take a left of the last road that leads you to the jetty with a house, and go all the way to the end of the little dirt road where there will be some houses that may be abandon. Climb over the fence and you will have found wallops cove. Its a true right point break in the bay, it wedges up of this tiny little jetty, and then just peels all the way into this cove, its amazing. I suggest any try it out, but beware of the bottom, there is all sorts of gnarly stuff under there. And if you were to keep walking past wallops cove, im sure you would find another wave, from the looks of it on google earth, there is just all kinds of shoals and coves over there. The other spot to surf in the bay is at the hovercraft ramp on fort story. When the wind is south and the swell is big and south, the conditions are usually on for this spot. The swells wrap in 90 degrees from the ocean, get groomed offshore by the south wind (this spot faces almost directly N) and hit this perfect like shoal/sandbar which may or may not have concrete in some places. The result is a very long, very perfect, top to bottom wave with straight up barrel sections, carve sections, pump your ass of to keep up sections, you get my point. Ive surfed it from like 3 feet ( it was about 7 foot in the ocean) to like 8 foot ( about 12-14 foot victory at sea conditions in the ocean). Every time its a blast. I have gotten some of the best surf of my life here, even towed into some of huge bombs that break way outside of the break. For any of you hellman out there, some huge waves break a ways out and about 900 yards down from this break. I towed into a wave that was about 10 feet out there, nothing to heavy, but the wave was pretty long and just huge, and it was breaking right in front of the Light House, so it was awsome. So ya, basically cape henry and the surrounding shores into the mouth of the bay on fort story can absolutly fire. NOW GO SCORE THEM. I TOLD YOU ALL GOOD INFO!!!
Oh ya and Micha, you are right. The swell generated from these north/ northeast winds over the bay do produce surfable, if not sometimes sizable wave. From surfing these spots in Hampton many times, have concluded that the swell is in fact coming from the bay, and not coming in from the ocean. But really guys if your surfing the bridge tunnel your just kidding yourself, Grandveiw is gonna be bigger and cleaner. But then again, Frisco will probably be like 8 foot and epic, so really when you see these conditions arising ( big swell, north wind) i don't why your not high tailing it there in the first place. Oh and for anyone looking for info on how to surf/access fishermans island just look up the countless other post on it, cause once again, i have posted that info on here a few times already.
boner is so lying, i try to get this kid to make me some dope tracks, but he's lazy. the chesapeke bay is full of oysters and sitch so why would you wanna surf on that. i'd rather surf in some sandyness, yeah.
OH .. i got it. but wouldn't that almost be a situation where the wind is howling straight onshore wherever the north wind swell was hitting? I can't imagine any swell in the bay with enough period to actually wrap around something and create any offshore scenarios....
bonersurf, how many hits of acid did you drop before charging 7 footers IN THE BAY!? you had to be hallucinating. Im sorry but that's just one of those things I'd have to do/see myself in order to believe.
Not kidding bro. That spot on fort story goes off. The only ****ty thing is that you have to walk pretty far to get there, cause you cant park on fort story, you have to park on the in sea shore state park (which i guess is called first landing state park now), the beach side, and walk all the way down to the hovercraft ramp on fort story (about 20 mins) and if you have a jet ski i have also drove in, i would not recommend this if the swell in the ocean is over 8 foot south swell, cause i will admit, it was pretty scary getting there. Then we like idiots drove around the cape a little where there were massive waves coming in, with 3 kids on 1 ski. so we just got outta there and beached the ski where it was calmer ( i.e. hovercraft ramp, where there were fun 3-4 foot long peeling rights, compared to the 8 foot choppy surf just around the cape). The spot only breaks on huge south swells with south winds. I really don't care if you don't believe me, cause I lived in the area for 20 years and surfed it numerous times. Noj is only calling my bluff cause he has surfed it with me and still lives in VA and does not want to blow up a really good secret spot. I mean really its not hard to believe, cause its just big swells wrapping in from the ocean. You can see that a little ways down the beach the waves are breaking in the ocean, the the swells hit the cape and wrap in till they hit this perfect sandbar. There are some pics of it on the net, just go to google and type in VB point break and you may find it. And also look it up on google earth, no pic of it or anything but if you know where im talking about you can see exacly how the swells would wrap into here. if you dont know where fort story is im not going to tell you. But Fort story Hovercraft ramp when the swell is Huge and south and the wind is too, thats all you need to know.
ill let you know how it goes when i check it out, when it happens. boner, if its that good, no one will hear about it. :z
