WP_002847.jpg In NJ there is smoke on the water right now. I guess its some type of fog or vapor due to the fact its 1 degree out and -15 with fn wind chill!! Maybe its fighting freezing? Crazy that the air is so cold that 40 degree water temps are causing a mix of cold and "warm" causing the fog like vapor. Wtf

Makes the ocean look like a cozy little hot spring. Very appetizing.

I thought your picture was great man. I was intrigued so I looked it up on NOAA. I found this -

    Evaporation or Mixing Fog

This type of fog forms when sufficient water vapor is added to the air by evaporation and the moist air mixes with cooler, relatively drier air. The two common types are steam fog and frontal fog. Steam fog forms when cold air moves over warm water. When the cool air mixes with the warm moist air over the water, the moist air cools until its humidity reaches 100% and fog forms. This type of fog takes on the appearance of wisps of smoke rising off the surface of the water.

Its not steam fog below freezing its freezing spray. Had to keep chipping it off my boat to stop from rolling over from the weight

    From today also:

Ps vapor (gas form) and spray (liquid form) are different, however they both can form ice, the (solid form) of water. Being on a boat today glide, you experienced a build up of both.
Wtf were you doing on a boat today?

I think most of the local winter watermen just stared at it today for as long as they could with morning coffee. Thanks for the info, for a second I thought it was apocalyptic, polar vortex, straight out of a movie stuff. All the seagulls were hanging in the water with the vapor, poor lil guys were just trying to stay warm according to the aforementioned science.

Here is a useful piece of advice that you've heard before:
Don't judge a book by its' cover. I still need to remind myself sometimes as well.

I've seen that before when it was really hot out that day when it was about 75 the first day of winter. It looked like that but I guess that's somewhat opposite cold water with hot air

Blackfish are some delicious, feisty, bait steeling, little f*ckers! I love fishing for them.
How did you do and where did you fish?

Blackfish are tastey, we used to catch them all the time in the lobster gear, especially in lost trawls that sat for a while.

I saw that smoke over the water once in Miami - It was early morning, no wind and the temperature had dipped into the lower 30s - the water temp was 78. My guess is it was a combo of warm water evaporating mixing with the cold air like when you boil water on the stovetop.

    Or like seeing your breath.
