So I paddled out today for some nice clean leftovers. It was nice and sunny with waves waist to chest and clean. Pretty good day here on the Gulf. Anyways, long story short, the water was as cold as Ive ever felt it here. After about 3 duckdives in a row I got this killer headache. Ive heard of this before but never had it happen to me. How do you polar bears up north handle it. Any tips that help prevent it.
My head still hurts after duck diving even with a hood. Buy a hood though for those rare days if you really can't handle it otherwise I just work through it goes away in a couple mins for me. I care more about getting waves then a headache haha but I think it's a shock from the cold sometimes maybe Advil if it doesn't go away. I've gotten pretty used to them by now
We've got Floridians complaining about headaches from cold water and us northeasterners are expected to provide a rational response?
Are you surprised emass? This is the same state that calls 911 when McDonalds runs out of chicken nuggets.
South Jetty Flea, nothing at all has surprised me in some time now. Last year, I got the headache without fail below 60F water. Haven't in months and that includes charging 4 of the last 10 days for 2-4 hours in 40-42F waves. Desensitization is a beautiful thing. I even like cold showers now. Biology, brah.
its got to be in the way 50s and lower but it will last me 20seconds and is gone most of the time. if i wear a hood im usually good, but i dont like hoods, gloves or booties so i suffer,i dont suggest it.
Not complaining. Just trying to see if there was a way to avoid it. Water temp is in the low 50s, which is pretty cold for us. I got nothing but respect for you guys that are charging up north. I guess the solution is to just suck it up and quit crying about it.
I surfed for 3 hours in 39 degree water yesterday. Air temp was in 40.....and I didn't get a brain freeze. Even took my hood off for 5 minutes because I was hot. I can't see a brain freeze in florida...lol.
Come up to NJ and surf for a couple weeks. You will get acclimated to REALLY cold water, then never have a brain freeze again in Fla. Or buy one of those little caps/removable hoods. Can't say I pity you much being that you are surfing in warm Florida, but I could see it happen in colder water if you aren't used to it.
This helps clear it up pretty quick: Exhale slow through your mouth with your tongue situated so the warm air flows across the top of your mouth. Once the sinus nerves warm back up the headache will go away.
It can't be that bad in florida whats the water temp in the low 60's damn, I got flushed out yesterday at LBI and that **** sucked took my breath away.
Water temps in the mid 60's? Does that even lend itself to creating ice cream headaches in the water. Pretty sure that here in NH the water temps in the summer barely reach 70's. ? The headaches don't kick in until it reaches low 50's. My suggestion is to start dunking thy head into ice water for a few moments at a time. This ought to do the trick. If that doesn't work, fill the bucket with apples and invite the kiddies. We call that bobbing for apples. Even with a hood I get headaches that last up to a minute or so when I have to duck dive multiple waves in a row. never had one last longer than a minute or so. If it persists longer than 4 hours, or you experience loss of vision or hearing, see a doctor immediately. Oh wait, that's for boner pills
"Florida Man whines about water temperatures in the Gulf". You don't say? Very interesting, Florida Man. I thought you only operated on Twitter ... https://twitter.com/_FloridaMan This one is a recent favorite: Police Find Florida Man Hiding Under Big Pile of Laundry
