It's on the ocean side, and after surfing yesterday further up the beach, its probably pretty accurate.

New 7mm boots didn't keep my feet warm for more than 15 minutes. they were numb within 30 minutes. Water didn't even feel cold on my face when i was underwater, just numbed it instantly. didn't even feel like water, very strange feeling, like my face was dry.

coldest water i've ever surfed in, and despite an above average wave count because of a very light crowd, and long paddles after each wave, i was freezing after 45 minutes and out of the water.

Haven't been that cold, or out of the water that quickly, since a decade ago when I used a 5/3 with a zipper back and un-taped seams during a blizzard. Considering today's wetsuits, to be out of the water that quickly, water is cold.

i guess not all of the tinfoil hat brigade has exited the building...

but seriously...w/ the runoff from freezing, then thawing, bays & inlets hitting the ocean & the strong offshore flow we've had, i'm not too surprised. it's not like there's been a whole lot of warm sun to heat up the surface layers, either. everything, weather-wise, is pointing to colder than normal water temps...although colder is a relative term; the last 2 winters have seen water temps well above normal for most of the winter. i think it was the winter of 2011/12 where the water didn't even really dip below 40 or 45 at all. last winter it barely dipped below 40.

Okay, and here I was whining today about the 64F ocean. Until the sun came out and warmed to air up to 70. You guys are tough and dedicated.

Spring Lake NJ this morning was 36 degrees, air temp around 16. But the sun made it feel like a balmy 26 degrees. Hah. I have 7mil drylock booties and after two hours my feet were dry but freezing. And my fbomb 5 mil gloves usually are great but in between waves I was shaking my hands just to keep blood circulating. And I surfed probably the worst I have all winter. But it was still fun.

well, clearly you thought wrong. a lot depends on coastal bottom contours & currents, but the buoys aren't lying to us all. the winter water temp has been unusually warm the last few years, for the most part. but then so have the last few winters in general.
i've posted it here before, but here's the link to the NOAA coastal water temp. monitoring site: http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/all.html. ocean water temps in the mid-low 30s as far south as virginia. a few of those monitoring stations are tucked back into bays, resulting in relatively warmer temps (like the cape may one).
here's a pic of a ferry in cape may busting through some thin sea ice en route to lewes, de:

...I surfed today for 2 hours in rhode island. 15 degree air prob zero with the 20+mph wind chill. Water close to as cold as it gets I'd assume before ice. Aweeome session. Shoutout to the xcel infini. Feet were first to go at the 2 hr mark. There were 12-15 ppl out as well.

I'd rather tuffin down, but that's not getting me any more waves as long as I live around here.
I have to say, it was pretty cool surfing during a heavy snow yesterday. Only a very small fraction of surfers are willing to do that or have the opportunity to. I'm not going to pretend like it wasn't cold though. Being tuff and acting tuff are very different.

    Whoa, what? Something's odd here.

I find the bickering more disturbing than the language. I think a forum for surfers should be a reflection of what goes on in an actual lineup, and I've heard some vitriol... but eventually that's self-policing.

Admins, please let poo poo words get rooster (it's in the Bible)-blocked by the automated filter. One you force a moderator to read through all the drivel posted on this site and judge whether diq is d*ck is d'q we're getting into Lord Acton's dictum (wait, is that a bad word?) Sounds like a d*ck. Quacks like a d*ck. Foul or fowl?

I wouldn't say this is male cow feces. You guys do a good job with the site and don't owe us anything, but when there's a sudden about-face and posts or whole threads are silently removed without a trace who knows what's true. There should at least be a message saying "this post was deleted". For all we know NJShredmachine was reciting Shakespeare and a "slang for the primary sexual organ of a male homo #nohomo sapien " moderator was altering his posts the whole time.

    SS, you're no Nazi.
