I vote for Doug's viewpoint on the causes and effects of screwing up a good peak with selfish and ignorant actions. Respect gets respect. Disrespect gets disrespect. It is very simple. To blindly paddle out at a crowded or semi-crowded peak at a well know spot and not give respect to the locals is asking for abuse. Begging for it.
Doug's post should be put in a new thread, closed and stickied. There are plenty of places on the net that spell out the priority rules but his post is an excellent summary of how to get along in the water. Plenty of groms sit around clueless wondering why they're getting mean mugged in the water because they haven't learned/read/been told about the finer points of surfing etiquette.
could we color code our spots like skiers do? red: hold it, pal…orange: go ahead; i suppose…yellow: righteous dood u go first…black: we're not worthy...
This was not open for voting, nor was I trying to argue or win something. I too agree with Dougs POV, I have been trying to make a point that, yes, overcrowding of spots sucks, Yet everyone *****es and moans and instead of acting on the situation they react. Paddling out and only surfing your home break even when there is a crowd does not entitle you to ****, except for an irritating session. Act on the situation and go somewhere else if you cant handle it. Anyone that says you can learn etiquette on the internet is a moron, you learn by adjusting and growing from your mistakes. 15 years ago I learned by being told after making the same mistakes over and over again. Teach the kids something of value, not how to be a **** when you get better at surfing. 90 percent of the east coast you could access by a unicycle, to say the internet is ruining it is like ****ing for virginity.
I see what you're sayin. We all learn from our mistakes, and grow as surfers and as humans if we pay attention. I still feel I am entitled to surf certain spots without the hassle that a stranger will get. I know no one is entitled in the ocean, ask anyone who has drowned if they are entitled. They can't answer because they drowned. Mark Foo, Jay Moriarty, Donnie Solomon, Todd Cheese, all were first class watermen and entitled to respect and a place in certain lineups, but Mother O don't care. I surf lots of alternative spots due to declining ability from old age. I am honest and aware enough that you won't see me paddle out at 1st Peak Sebastian Inlet on a hurricane swell on a Saturday afternoon. Some people are not that aware and they deserve what they get. Due to the internet, wave cams and social media I have to put up with a more crowded line up at my local spot, that I have surfed for decades. I don't have to like it, and can still get my share of set waves. I don't get in the way of the young shredders, and they afford me a certain amount of space. If I got in their way they would treat me like any stray kook from Miami. Respect gets respect. And I can vote on anything, anytime, anywhere. Land of the FREE! And soon to be living in a State of Medical Marijuana here in Florida. That is the power of the vote! (Just thought I'd go places with this thread).
