Uugghh I hate the fair weather surfer. Seriously to hell with ya.

Fair weather surfers brag all year about rippin cane swell brah and have zero etiquette. Everything always sucks bro. They **** up you politely approach and they get ****ty. You flip and everyone turns on you because thy too are fair weather surfers that are there to have fun but cause the most injuries. Bro I hate leashes but you can't control chit.

Man are you serious. I can't use punctuation. M walking dog and on an iPhone. Ok I'm not a surfer. I have an iPhone and my hands is cold. A real surfer wouldn't have a phone but I do. Whoever saw that coming. I'm heated.

Why surf in the wintr time. Dude surfing rules. How the hell didhttp://www.mommyskitchen.net/2008/07/delilahs-limeade-and-its-story.html?m=1 you get into college. Are you a spoiled rich kid with an iPhone. That goes on international surfing adventures. Most folks seem to be so I got an iPhone to monitor their progress. Use that limeaid recipe I inadvertently inserted and write about that. My hands cold go surf or die. Next question.

It smells like straight piss right here and I blame this thread.

If you truly love surfing you'll surf in any temperature, I'm from nj and enjoy having hardly anyone in the lineup during the winter , more waves for me. I don't consider anyone a true surfer if they only surf in the summer because anyone can surf in the summer and how is someone to improve if they only do it for 1 season a year? That's why we surf in the winter because we love it and all want to get better at it and/or cannot get enough of that great feeling while riding a wave. Summer surfing and winter surfing;they are both extremely different experiences.

Forget all you brahs talkin bout hibernating from the cold. Get a grip. I just broke free from 12 hrs of straight work indoors to rip pavement for a half hour in 16 degrees. And that air is dry boy. Brave the elements sons, get out and liva la vida stokkka!

Iam not sure what the topic is but in relation to why surf winter or "anytime"...Plain and simple...Surfing creates a euphoric feeling and is intensified with a good session. That's why we become severely moody when it goes flat for an extended period...it really is like a drug, a good one...without it, our mood changes.

I actually stopped surfing for many years. Family, career, other interests...one session back out last summer and it was like I was reborn...decided to drop 50 lbs to maximize my performance and increase the euphoria. Never felt better and missed only one swell since summer. I know since coming back, I have dropped some serious coin...new quiver due to the weight loss and wetsuits for every temp imagined...All worth it.

mrcoop, glad you came back. Imagine you were a tough one to deal with during the interim but now you're stoked again, good for you. That's a life score report you just gave.

Im fairly new to surfing but the wave drought this past summer sparked something inside me. My previous wetsuit was only capable of keeping me out in the water until the first weekend in Dec (and even that was pushing it). I started jonesin' real hard around middle of january and when the first winter wetsuit sales came up I found myself jumping on the hottest deal. Ended up with a new 6/5 suit and now im set. I even won a season pass to Sunday River, Sugarloaf and Loon but I still find myself hoping for the next swell to come by. Last week I had one of my best days, went snowboarding and surfing in the same day. Like some others have said, "Its like a drug". Ive got to have it no matter what the temp is outside.

    Surfs Up BRAHS!!!!

    True story ^^

Nothing like the thinned out winter line ups. Takes a day that would be a friggin zoo and makes it truly enjoyable. Summer Jabrones piss me off and get no respect.

Reasons why I believe people surf in cold weather.

    - no crowd
    - free and widely available parking
    - massive waves
    - stress release (that's year round)
    - good excuse to get some outdoor exercise
    - riding a wave makes you feel really good

    Maybe not so simple, but:

    - the feeling of accomplishment. When I get home from a morning session and it's 10F outside, I kinda feel like I did something most people wouldn't do. I like that feeling.

I think a lot of us on here are missing the kids question.
Everyone knows "why" we go out. Simply put - its way better conditions (swell wise). I believe he is asking the why is the swell better?? More science than philosophy.

I dont know exactly just trying to get the question redirected.

Surfing really is a medicine of sorts for me. It helps so many people by allowing them to create in an athletic manner. People often show their personality through their surfing. However, many aggressive rippers are super quiet and introverted. For me it keeps me sane and happy. Im a combat vet marine with a few issues from Iraq and I suffered a traumatic brain injury during training in 29 palms CA. When the symptoms of tbi and ptsd combine, I really struggle to not go completely crazy and over protective of everything. Iraq turned on some switches in my head that are nearly impossible to turn off. But surfing helps me maintain balance even on the days I completely suck. If you are interested at all about learning a bit more about how the war on terror changes a persons internal make up, please read my story. Its called The Song Each Bullet Sings. If nothing else, surfing has helped me move away from some of the nightmares. Vietnam vets have helped me big time and told me that "those nightmares will always be there. You just have to be able to put them in a drawer in your mind, and open it and close it on your terms the best way you can." Surfing, especially during this frigid winter, helps me do that. Good luck man.

Thank you for your service. If you can't put those demons to rest, hopefully you can at least put them on a leash. Best of luck to you Mattyb.

Thanks man. I really like "put the demons on a leash." Try and at least control them or let em come out while being creative. Great way to look at it. Thanks tlokein

Anytime man. I've got friends and family that have served (some still do) over multiple generations. Wife's grandpa was a tank gunner in the 737th in WWII. Used to love getting him to talk about it before he passed away.

People (myself included) can debate endlessly the reasons we go to war and if they are legit or not, but always respect those who served.

Not true. Total nonsense. For some/many people it ruins it.

Actually 3 seasons a year considering winter is only one season and people from cali/hawaii who surf 5 days a week in head high waves could and DO say the same thing about you boys on the ec.

If you were really that dedicated you'd move where there's surf regularly rather than waiting for weeks at time for a descent swell sometimes.

Fall has bigger and more powerful waves than winter due to hurricanes. Also, spring can have bigger and is more consistent. The reason summer is flat is due to lack of frontal systems and jet stream going farther north. Storms= winds = swell
