going to cabo san lucas from the 21st to the 26th. Im bringing a couple shortboards. I know there are good spots facing south all over the tip of baja but with a big west swell coming in I'm wondering what the best surf spots are on the western side of southern baja...
Cerritos is your best bet on a west, even some NW's break there. It's about 1-1 1/2 hours out of Cabo. Before you bail on Cabo, check on Monuments. It might pick up swell that most of Costa Azul will miss.
Cabo is a good time. Have not been in a while but you should have a blast. There are a few breaks you could check out. Dont be worried about trespassing at a few spots, the signs are just decoration
do yourself a favor and grab the "surfers guide to baja". that will give you some good direction for breaks on the west coast. definitely check out cerritos, but go eslewhere too and dont be afraid to explore a bit. cerritos is a lot different now though. did the road trip from San Diego to Cabo back in 2003 and it was a lifechanging trip for me. that book got us down and back and saved our lives, plus got us into some fun surf. you will not be dissapointed.
I 2nd Cerritos...I don't think there is that much more north of there, at least without a decent drive.
there are a couple of good breaks in Todos Santos, about another 1/2 click north of Cerritos, on the road to La Paz. Kinda fun to check out, but a takes a little searching on some typical Baja-style roads just out of town. If you're into that stuff, ya know. If it's breaking, the crowds will be considerably smaller than in Cerritos. But then again, you won't be walking out of the surf directly towards the bar for cervezas and ceviche. Todos Santos is a great little town with some great restaurants and a cool little surf shop. Kinda geared more towards Mexican tourists than visiting gringos, which makes it mo bettah. FYI, the town of Todos Santos is *not* the same as Todos Santos Island, which is located off the coast from Ensenada.
Yes surf Cerritos or some of the secret spots just north of there. Then have Mexican dinner in Todos Santos. Then drive back to Cabo with setting sun playing Hotel California on your radio. Perfect day
I was going to start a new thread but figure it's worth keeping all the Cabo stuff in one spot. My predicament is a touch different.. I'm going for a bachelor party march 20-23rd. I'd like to get on something while I'm there. Is there anyway to access to pacific breaks without a rental car - bus or public transport? Also, are there any decent boards to rent down there or is it bring or bust (f'n united charges 200 each way for international boards still)? Any other suggestions are definitely welcome.
ill be in baja round the same time. Dont think we are making it all the way down to cabo tho. driving from nor cal all the way down. The goal for us is near scorpion bay.
seldom i dont know i gotta buy a wetsuit for this trip! Not stoked on that part! That being said what mil are ya'll bringing to baja??
leety coming from trunkable paradise Id go with a 4/3, winter acclimated folks might deal with a 3/2. get boots too, 3 mil maybe 5 mil
Thats what i'm afraid of MIS! I wont do booties tho. Even when i lived in Northern California, never wore them. Cant feel the board thru em. But i am thinkin 4/3, just cause being cold is the worst thing in the world. Honestly i've been trying to see if i packed any of my old 5/4's or my 6/5/4 at my pop's place in cali. No luck on that one. I guess 4 years is too long to assume i left one in a box somewhere.
there is zero way of getting to the pacific on Mexican public transportation. You'll either need a rental car, or a ride from a trusting Gringo. Also, you can rent boards from the Costa Azul Surf Shop, in San Jose Del Cabo (closer to the airport). Usually at least one cute Mexican girl in the shop. I don't think you'll need rubber that far south in March. Usually around late April to early June, that area gets some weird currents that will necessitate a 3/2 (a 4/3 is probably too much, unless you're heading north of Guerrero Negro)
