Had my first lesson yesterday. The water was 39. I felt fine with the water temp except for my hands, which were numb within 5 minutes. I lasted about 45 minutes and felt fine otherwise. I'll have some 5mm gloves next time. I wore that 4/3. I started slurring my words and being unable to move the muscles in my face at the point I decided to call it. I'll hopefully head back midweek next week. Thanks again for the rec.

Slurred speech and temporary facial paralysis do not sound good. 39 degree water is nothing to fool with. Wind makes it even worse. You'd best be wearing a hood. I wear a 4/3 with 7 mil boots, 5 mil gloves, and of course a hood. That got me through this VA Beach winter...barely. The coldest the water got here this winter was 37, but 37 was also the coldest air temp I was out in. I would need a thicker suit if I lived further north. But I'm older. Although I try, I cannot fully ignore that factor. My sessions last an hour or so, maybe two if the sun is out and the wind is down. I think it helps to get acclimatized somewhat to the water as it cools by surfing regularly through the fall, into and through the winter. Learning to surf is no cinch; and in 39 degree water, you're dealing with additional challenges. Also learn the tricks some the veterans use dealing with cold weather and water. I don't qualify as a veteran. I've only been at this for a little over 18 months, including two winters. Best of luck.
Get a tube of vaseline for the face if you'll be out in the winter gnar. Major difference. And if the tube gets lost in your car just use chapstick. You'll be happy you did. DosXX is right. The acclimatization over time and steadily receding water and air temps will ease you into this madness next season. Then again, you'll only feel better by the week since you're doing it in reverse and it will only get warmer. Just put the mitts on fella. At least for another couple months. I've charged single digit air and mid to high 30s water the last few months in New England and was in trunks and a 2mm long sleeve topper yesterday for 3 hours out west when everyone else was in 3/2s. Your body will get used to this, just don't give it too much too soon and there is a slim margin of error on time and temp if you're unprepared in some way (no gloves in 39F water, rips or tears in wetty, suit too big, etc.). More rubber = safer and better until you're certain you can shed some for improved mobility without sacrificing health and performance due to the cold. Hope you're stoked and enjoy the ride bro!
30 minutes of bible study on the beach before going in, while the waves are just mackin' at Tower Road...? How does anyone handle the dual-agony of that?
Dude, you're like my dad. 3/2 all winter in RI with a 3 mil hood and boots. 7 mil gloves tho ahahhaa. Glad you're not in the hospital man.
Never have used Vaseline on my face. Seen guys do it, but not in to slimy greasy sh!t on my face. My face definitely got cold this winter, but I'd rather that than a slimy face
And I thought I had it bad in my 4/3 with hooded vest underneath. New 5/4 next season fo shizzle...got a little too cold for me in my current setup this year.
The damage to your face without it could possibly make it greasy as a result of drying out. Then it can flake and get all sorts of gnarly. Throw some grease on the face for the sesh then wash it off. Easy choice bro.
