Stringer less I see. Are you using xtr foam ? From what I know of xtr foam its great for flexing which im sure is a big part of these designs you have. Hell I want that board man. That would be a good short board for me . So are these pics already the shaped blank ? And are you cutting your parallel profile blanks from foam blocks with a hot wire or something like that ? I'm interested. Thanks for sharing.
that looks sweet. how many fins you plan on putting on it? I'm limited to 8' boards. I strap it to the ceiling of my work van.
Hi Charles the blank is standard EPS, we have a couple of different densities to choose from. Yes that's the shaped blank. The robot removes 3mm which is the thickness of the 3d glass we'll be using. I draw the designs on the computer and they are shaped with a robot, we are working with a new company and a bunch of fellows who are pretty switched on. I'm not going for flex at these lengths, instead I'm going for the historical weight range which my 70's boards had. So this board will finish at 15 pounds approximately, at 8ft by 25" wide by 2.75" thick and 70 litres. I'm doing 4 different 8 foot shapes initially, some of them being thinner and lower in volume, all at 25" wide although we have many more waiting to be loaded for cutting paths in the 7 to 8 foot range, some of which are narrower. We are 3d printing fin boxes which won't need denser foam inserts for strength. Did I mention how the 3d glass works? She's a very pretty shape I think. Single continuous concave from nose to tail which is what we've been doing since '94, quite a mellow concave on this one at about 4mm.
Thanks, I dig the van, 'men at work' lol. There are lots of fin possibilities for this shape, to start with I'll do a single fin with boxes to take a trailing tunnel if desired. These boxes could also take quad trailers ( with zero tow in) so there's a case for a couple more side boxes for a quad setup. That would allow 2+1, single, single plus tunnel, tunnel plus two side fins, quad or twinzer.
So you are essentially making pop-outs now? I mean, not technically a pop-out, but still not hand-shaped. Interesting.
Roy are you designing your fin boxes in house ? If so what's your 3d rendering software of choice ? I am dabbling with solid works currently and seeking to make a fin box from wood. Matrix quiver is cool, thanks for sharing
Make up your mind, then call them what you like, that's my advice. for myself, I'll call them surfboards.
So switching from wood to foam? Didn't the surf indusrty do that about 50 years or so ago? You are not becoming a sheep following blindly what Slater and Merrick say is best are ya?
'Switching' from wood to foam implies that I am no longer making wooden boards. In fact I'm still making wooden boards. Anything else?
We call them pop-outs here in Charlestonia. A label applied to any non-hand shaped board. It is just interesting, because you are a self proclaimed Luddite. This is sort of the opposite direction. Solana surfboards in Cali make sticks the same way. They are a cheap option for people that want a bit more quality, but can't afford hand shaped.
Im after a dxf export into my shop bot tool path. i would like to have that little router cut something that can hold a fin. Im only in conceptual phases of this and Im new using solid works but I have some excellent human capitol thats interested, so we might come up with something soon. Just playing with ideas really thats all
No I'm not, many people make that mistake because I use wood and have a surfer mag account called 'Luddite', which is a joke. .
Roy Turd Stuart, it has come to my attention that the only thing your interested in, on this forum, is yourself. You have relentlessly disrespected the forum community by participating exclusively in your own worthless threads of self promotion. Dueshbag. "F~ck everyone else and what they're talking about, it's all about meeeeeeeee!", right? Well, f~ck you too pal. This forum wasn't initiated for you to promote your nasty, over priced, wooden, giant, toboggan crossed with a snow shoe attempts at making surfboards. Love, Doug
I'm not one to usually come to the rescue on these posts, but Roy has been pretty civil despite all the trolling...as well...he's kept his focus only on this post. As was mentioned before...you don't have to click on the thread Doug...as you know what you're in for... I have enjoyed the pics and fin threads--at least it's surf related...interested in seeing your foam board glassed Roy. Whats your typical lay-up (glass type, etc.) for the lam?
1,000,000% best post of the whole damn decade! Roy is like a toddler who thinks the entire world revolves around him.
