4/3 yet in Jersrey?

I'd rock a 4/3 if the water was up to 43. Those boots will be more than plentiful. Could get away with thinner and also on the mitts but only you know you best. Wear a cap to cover the ears. Don't want those drilled later on.

 

I don't drop the 6/5/4 until water hits 48-50. One because I'm old. Two I find the attached hood more flexible/comfortable than when detached hood is tucked into my 4/3.

Plus it's supposed to be a bit windy tomorrow.

 

6 mil man. I am cold in a 4/3 when its 53 degrees in the water. I guess im a cold water wuss though

 

My buddy was in a 4/3 last saturday in RI, still below 40 or hovering right around there...but it was a quality suit w/ attached hood...

 

In Jersrey... I wear a 5mil until it gets up near 50, mostly due to the detached hood.

Some winters it only gets down to around 40.

 

4/3 w/ hooded vest underneath = good to go imho.

 

i've never gotten the point of a vest under a suit. it limits mobility and feels like i'm being bear hugged all session. if you have a thicker suit just wear that.

 

It was a personal economic thing for me this year.

 

Aren't you basically choosing to wear a poor mans winter suit, when you own the correct suit? I would definitely wear the 6 mil, and be toasty for as long a session as I need. Layering suits sucks

With todays wetsuit technology, I don't see any real advantage to dropping to a thinner suit real early. For me it's all about being as warm as possible.

In 43 degree water with 20 mph offshores, I think your more likely to get a chill in a layered 4/3 then you are to roast in a 6/5/4.

I've done it. Some friends still do it. But you've already got the right suit..

 

I was actually considering trying the 4/3 tomorrow. Even in 35-37 degree water I was hot this year in my 5.5/4 pyrotech. Now that I know others are considering it... I feel a little less crazy.. thanks..

 

I always go for warmth over general comfort no matter where I live. I don't shed rubber until water temps are up in the 70s. I never understood the guys trunking it when it his 63 and 65 and stuff. With wetsuit technology, my 4/3 feels the same as a 2 mil. I understand 6 mil is a lot more rubber, but I havent had a thick suit like that in year. I would think that there isnt too much more girth from the 4 to 5 to 6 range... Gotta stay warm and comfy out there.

Yeah agree with others 6mm is where it's at. Why be uncomfortable? A 4/3 was built for an average person in fall in California. And with stretch neoprene all wetsuits feel way less bulky. On a related note, water temps are FREEZING right now. Way below normal. Still seeing mid-upper 30s in new england. BRUTAL for April. Amazing to see how Hatteras is the diving line of cold/warm. Such a huge contrast.

 

That's not a bad problem to have for a surfer in NJ. While I'm not an overly cold person, I haven't felt too warm in my 6 mil this winter. Seems like the water has been colder than normal this year.

 

Yeah this year has been crazy everywhere. I can't complain since the water down here is in the low 60s, but I am almost positive at this time last year it was right around 70. I feel like by mid april I was in trunks... It also got about 6-7 degrees colder this year than it did last year....

I was in central florida earlier this week and it was chilly in the water.

 

Wore a 4/3 the other day for the first time this year. Water around 43. Was toasty warm for a 2 hour session...tho no wind and air a tad warm. If it was blowing and real cold, would of worn the thicker suit.
