whatttt? medina is not a better surfer than JJF. he's beat him in a few heats but it's not even close how much better of an overall surfer JJF is compared to him.

jj definitely better, but hes no medina.the thing about gabs is hes consistant,he lands 99.8% of his airs.i would like to see jj do better on tour but its hard when conditions are shytty.gabs is used to surfin shytty brazo waves

so your point is that even though gm just beat jjf 2x jjf is still a better surfer??? and 'its not even close?'

I only started watching the comps last year, never was really into it. I think it's awesome to watch some of the best surfers surf these spots though. With that being said I think jjf is the better surfer if you take the competition aspect out of it. In good waves like pipe his surfing is phenomenal. He's got airs but his power surfing and barrel riding is where he really shines I think.

In competition Medina is smarter and does better because of it. He surfs off the score, builds up a good score and goes for the hail mary when necessary. John John just goes for a 10 every wave which is great, just not for competition.

losing a few heats to someone does not make them better than you. contest surfing aside then, JJF is still miles better then medina.

aside from the one small clip from the winter on the north shore i've never seen a medina free surf clip. all he does is surf contests and that's a small portion of what makes a "good surfer"

medina is an overly tight, contest machine that tends to do well in crappy waves. how'd medina do at cloud break last year or any wave of consequence for that matter.

um, i think he got second to kelly. and that 'just one clip' of him riding pipe could be compared to a virtuoso
(gm) playing a stradivarius (pipe). comment away but watch wotw..november i think for which he got a check.

he didn't win any of the wotw but got a wave that was nominated.

you find me one medina clip that can honestly compete with any of these clips i'll believe you.

solid clip but aside from the pipe contest all those waves were head high at best. JJF is doing the same thing in much bigger waves and that's where i'd give him the edge.

I don't even think it's close. JJF gets deeper barrels, higher airs and is more ballsy in big stuff. JJF surfs like he's playing Kelly Slater on Playstation. Medina is nasty, but JJF is on another level.

Nice thumbnail for the Medina video. Medina is clearly better at thumbnails though

Deeper barrels, Yes. Higher airs, no. Both get crazy high airs.... Definitely more ballsy in the big stuff...

But I actually think Medina's turns are better... I didn't think that until I read an interview with Matt Biolos and Darren Handley. They both said that JJF's turns are weak. When I read it I thought they were crazy, but if you watch their last heat it's night and day.

dnt remember last yr,but the yr before that was kely vs gabs in the final, and I believe it was the 1st time slater beat gabs, after getting that barrel where he was too deep, fell off, regained all in the barrel and came out.I seen plenty of footage of gabs charging maxed out pipe.I wouldn't say he doesn't do well in oversized surf

kinda only half-topic but in addition to his (like jjf) shocking talent the kid has cojones. i may be the only one
(besides team brazilero) who noticed this but on the day kelly won title no. 11 gabriel pulled into a heavy pipe
tunnel - once inside chose to MOCK the hawaiian style/lopez type cruising...IN HAWAII...i thought it was
hysterical and would have been far wider noticed were that specific day not hijacked by satan; that is the
    horrific slaughter in connecticut.
