Hate to say it but living at exit 0 really sucks, we never get the swells that up north gets, the noreaster swells we get are usually big but extremely windy, less exposure and overall the waves just blow. Other than Avalon (which im sad to call a good wave) and ocean city, if we want waves we must travel to jenks, bay head to even get waves worth talking about. Is there even any plus sides living in Cape May rather than point pleasant, if not i dont know what im doing here.
ying: cape may is a good and unique break. yang: cape may is a good and unique break. i want to knock it....but, like, have you ever caught it good? that left can sizzle so hot it melt da wax...
I don't understand the whole n.jers vs central jers.n jers is Hoboken, paterson, etc.central jerz is sandy hook to barneget.id rather be a s.jersey surfer.waves aren't as good as up here, but its consistant.when we get a 3 ft swell in moco,we have dumping shorebreak.when u guys have 3 ft,u have nice long lines to carve up. its basically barrels vs turns and airs.central jers is all barrels
Northern Monmouth County Jetties rock.. I grew up in Normandy Beach in the late 70's and 80's surfing sand bars.. Moved to LB in the late 80's and never looked back. I must say there are definitely better places to live on this planet then DIRTY JERSEY...but sometimes you just gotta make the best of it- like those 2 x a year winter trips to PR
Those lefts are why I don't care if I go frontside or backside today... almost 40 years later... anywhere on the planet. It is a unique place, and it can be magic. I have many memories of perfect days... hurricane surf as much as the famed Nor'Easters. But living up here in NoMoCo, after 20 plus years in both places... no doubt in my mind it's both bigger, more powerful, and more consistent when it counts (3 out of 4 seasons) here. And if you live in CM, anything north of the Courthouse light is "north jersey."
Brah... Come on - seriously?? Everyone knows Belmar, NJ makes SOUTH Jersey the the best- better then CNj and north...
When south jersey gets an off shore hurricane swell, we get nice long wave perfect for turns and airs, but in north and central you guys get barrels which I wish we got some of too
dude i feel your pain.. i feel it so much after 2 years of nothing but reading the forums on here, i finally decided to join all you nut cases and actually made an account.. Ugh, why did u have to name Avalon.. we dont need anymore people piling into that wave when we already have 90% of south jersey surfers below OC charging that wave every time there is a bump.. i've been surfing avalon for years.. i lifeguarded on that island for 6 years now (finally retired, looking for a real life job).. and let me tell you.. just look around.. Avalon isnt that great and im soooo over it as well. Avalon was good untill they dredged the **** out of it now it rarely barrels at all like it use too.... however, if u search on that island u may be surprised. all though the window is like 40mins-1hour long (yes, i know exactly when the window is, i have it down to a T but sometimes its a bust, oh well then i'll just go surf avalon lol) where it barrels like no other place in south jersey besides OC and up, im talking i've seen stand-up barrels here.. my select few friends that i bring to this bar have been getting shacked/covered up/head dips in at this bar since summer and all winter.. sadly now my sand bar has filled in from all the storms we got because the ocean took all the sand they dredged onto the beach and filled the sand bar in..yea they are back to square 1 again with barely any beach lol good thing the island is rich as **** and will probably just dump even more money into dredging.. so now i have to find a new one until the bar fixes itself. I got a couple sand bars lined up to try on that island and been looking for someone to try it with me because i really dont like surfing a lone but no takers so far they rather just surf avalon over going on an adventure and looking for a new sand bar to try.. Yea Cape May.. lets see..... its so fickle that i rather eat a whole jar of pickles. i call it Cape Gay but when its ON i call it Death Barrels. its either a huge bust and waste of time or you get lucky as **** and it will be one of the best waves of your life, however since they made poverty "safer" it just hasnt been the same.. so Cape Gay can go **** itself.. Im not sure if you know but north wildwood does get fun and trestles does too. Sea Isle is garabage from whenever i checked it and strathmere only gets really fun when its a huge ground swell. you should try traveling to AC which is what i've been doing recently just to get away from the south jers garbage we have down here .. solid fun wave up there.. how can u guys say there is no central jersey.. i would say north of AC to LBI is central jers.. north of LBI is north jers.. I consider anything below AC expressway South Jersey.. idc what you guys think other wise. I suggest stop checking Avalon and start looking else where.. i could always use an extra hand finding a new sand bar.. you have to switch it up or you get in a rut. i'll be hopefully surfing tomorrow somewhere south of avalon tomorrow and north of cape may. come find me and u might be surprised that this wave works with SW/WsW winds but like i said.. its such a small window when u get on it you will feel on top of the world and you can laugh with me about all the kooks and hard chargers that charge avalon every time there is swell and dont bother looking anywhere else. look around man.. it wont kill you but maybe kill ur gas tank trying to find this wave haha. ok rant over, i hope this was a worth while first post. Many more to come!
Central Jerz is the GSP to 295, 195 to ACE. The beach doesnt count, Camden doesnt count. Look at a map and tell me that isnt central NJ.
I love the fact that if where I live and usually paddle out is small or breaking on shore- I can drive 10-30 minutes south where conditions could be better. Agree NJ has so much negativity but you can usually find a dude in the water who is just a happy to be surfing in cold and often small waves as you are. Hope that continues, whether its southern or northern parts of the coast.
4 year reader. 1st time poster... Avalon why we have to bring up Avs... Ive been surfing avalon since i was 8. growing up going to grannys down the shore. The place had awesome waves up until 4 years ago when all the dredging occurred.. Last year I maybe surfed 5 times in Avs. twice in the spring before teh season and then maybe two times in the summer. Avalon is beat, you have one great break and a couple others that can be good but are kinda fickle. and in the summer, after 3pm during the week you have every single grom from the island coming to surf this one break. I am kinda over going to avalon for surf. I used to be able to surf right infront of my family beach but the past couple years the sand bars have just sucked. Ive had to walk down a 6 blocks to the main peak with 50 other surfers. I will always be loyal to avs, ill even paddle out there for easter but if I am going to the beach to surf, im going to LBI. So many more breaks and ridable waves, Your garanteed to get a peak with just u and your friends. I rememeber the good old days in avs, like 8 to 10 years ago it seemed like every labor day weekend we had a huge hurricane and that sunday or monday would be 6 to 8 foot bombs rolling in and lining up perfectly all day. I vaguely even remember a couple spots showing outside breaks or what i thought were outside breaks(I was twelve at the time). Even hurricane bill was awesome for avalon. perfect lines. But from now on, I gotta go up north and I suggest to anyone from the south. LBI is ok but I hear BELMAR is top knotch, you might want to check that spot out.
In my opinion South Jersey would be anywhere south of Atlantic City, Central Jersey, would be from the south end of LBI up to Barnegat, and North Jersey id from Island Beach State Park to Sandy Hook. Growing up and learning to surf in SJ since I was 4(10 years) has had its ups and downs but i always found a way to have fun surfing. Now, I know its not North Jersey, but there are still some fun waves. Ive been surfing North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest for 10 years and there are some good spots. There is a shallow outside sandbar through most of the Crest that really has some fun waves when its over chest high. In september i got a pass to go down to the rocks and it is bt far the best place I have ever surfed. Always 2 feet bigger than everywhere else in NJ and the jetty blocks sideshore winds. A big area of good waves and perfect hollow lefts and rights
Avalon used to be good yes, but what harm does giving away the name of a beach town do? That would be the same if i said, "hey everyone there's this town ocean city and it gets really really good." It does absolutely nothing its already packed as it is and discloses no spot names. Im just saying if you plan on living in NJ and surfing for the rest of your life, get the fck out of south jersey. North Jersey, like deal and sandy hook, is alittle extreme but pt pleasant could suit my surfing lifestyle. Squan, jenks, close to bay head, and other really heavy breaks youre bound to score great waves when there's a bump. Growing up in cape may surfing, really ****ty sandbars, getting 3 quality sessions a year is getting really old. As for me? I have the option in a few months of going to Santa Cruz so i may just pursue that. See ya later right coast, much love. At least for now
