Forum, I picked up the new XCEL X2 6/5 for this cold water season and the thing has turned out to be absolute garbage; tape ripping, neoprene tears, and the chest panel is going to let go soon. I could send it to XCEL for repairs, but I'm jumping ship on their products after an almost as awful experience with a 3/2 I got from them a couple years ago. I can exchange the suit at the shop I bought from for one of the Quicksilver Cypher wintersuits. Does anyone have one of these suits or know of anyone who does? How has it worked out for them? Appreciate any input. Thanks!
pretty odd as myself and friends with xcels love them. i'd send it back and get a new one via warranty.
I have a 3/2 cypher that I got four years ago and loved. Seams started to leak pretty badly after about three years (which is pretty standard in my experience). Thought it was a good suit for the price I paid. I can't speak to their thicker suits, but mine held up well enough I would buy another without hesitating.
I had to send my 3/2 back to them a couple times. They never replaced and only repaired. I also don't want to send it back and get the same exact suit, only to have the these same problems again. Maybe it's just the XCEL Infiniti line that sucks?
I'm very good to her. Wash inside and outside after every use. Give her the occasional suit-shampoo bath.
is the suit the proper size? if you're taking that sort of care of her you shouldn't be experiencing that much breakdown of materials. one time i wore a medium for a fall when i'm actually a large. shredded that suit good. you could have wetsuit aids tho. in which case, i'd get tested.
Soap is not good for the suit, use water only then hang on a wetsuit hanger (wider hanger so it won't stretch the neoprene). Also, you should make sure your not tugging the suit when you take it off and on. One the other hand, I have a Cypher and really love it. I was a little nervous switching to Quiksilver from Xcel but I dont think I will look back. I've had Rip Curl's and they give a horrible rash and my Xcel is so leaky. The Cypher is super warm and confortable. The quick wicking fabric is sometime dry when I get out of the water. Highly suggest Quiksilver suits.
Also, do not Pee in your suit. Thats also helps breakdown the suit and is simply gross. Its like have a surf session in a dirty pamper.
I have an extremely awkward build. I'm just over 6'2" so an LT makes sense height-wise, but I have all the other dimensions of an MT. The suit is an MT so I'm just right over the line for their height suggestion (goes to 6'1") It probably is just the AIDS though...
The soap I use is a wetsuit shampoo (Piss Off by Ripcurl) and I only do it every once in a great while. I do all the other things oyu mentioned. Do you have the cypher 6/5 or the 5.5? The 5.5 seems to be their high-end model.
yea that's a tough fit for sure and could definitely be adding to the suit getting shredded far quicker than it should. i think you'd be better off finding a suit that fits properly. go try a bunch on or see if your local shop has any demo suits you can try out.
I picked up a 6/5/4 this past Febuary and i have been using it about twice a week since then. No issues so far. Super warm, started taking the hood down while waiting for waves cause im so hot. Ill probably be wearing it for another month until i can get by in my 4/3 syncro. I really like the Quiksilver line and it seems to run a little lighter on the wallet.
it's scientifically proven that peeing your suit will give it Wetsuit AIDS. no one wants that. thinkle before you tinkle.
I knew this thread was going to go downhill as soon as pee was mentioned. Let's try to keep on track, but in reality, thanks for the advice while it lasted.
advice: try on a couple of different suits at your local shop. see if they have any demos. seems like a lot of people that have quik suits like them don't pee in your suit, it'll give it wetsuit AIDS.
you are washing it to much, squirt of hose water and thats it, I beat my xcels into the dirt and they were champions, if you are jumping ship at least send it back, get a new one or fixed one and then sell it to put towards the next suit
