The bonus is there's no front and back side. Lefts, rights, it don't matta. tlokein, your comment about kneeboarding behind a boat brought back terrible memories. Even as a kid I was smart enough to realize that sport sucked. Got my first wakeboard in like '94 and never touched the kneeboard again.
+1 to that. I did the same, got on a wakeboard and never got on a kneeboard again. Or a waterski either. Wakeboarded for years (and destroyed a knee in the process), then wakesurfing came along and I haven't touched my wakeboard since. I might take the old girl out for spin this year though. Just keep it mellow, throw some spins and small airs and such. Its nice to be able to lay into a turn so hard you get the board perpendicular to the water. Yeah, might have to get on that again.
Seen. Thx for posting. Very cool pix (& njsurfer's as well). It is always interesting to learn the history that shaped the activity we all enjoy. At this phase in my life, having had both knees scoped, this facet of wave riding is not for me.
Anytime cdog, glad you enjoyed! Same here on the knees, only had one scoped, but man, that does look tough on the knees.
as far as i know. last i heard, he was living down in oz & riding a matt. here's his website (i'm floored that he actually HAS one!) http://www.georgegreenough.com/George_Greenough/Home.html
My first board was a 5'2" twin fin(a knee board to me) by Don Smith of Hawaii. I googled to see if there a pic but found this crazy thing instead.
There used to be a decent kneeboard guy in Virginia Beach who had beads strung onto his wetsuit back zipper pull. He was a fixture during the 80s-90s. I haven't seen him in a while though. There used to be some other randoms I would see kneeboarding in my youth.
funny on here everybody hates anyone that doesn't ride a shortboard.longboarders,sups,boogies,kayaks,etc. what makes kneelows so special?im not haten btw,i seen plenty of cool shyt by those people in my day,but its very rare to see everyone agreeing.im with the 1 guy who said ur almost up why stop?idk I see it no different then sponging,u can fit in the tight pockets and maneuver ur body to pump through a tube that a stand up surfer has no chance of making.i seen kneeboarders charging mavericks.im a fan of anyone who can ride a wave to its potential regardless of craft.did u guys ever see that kayaker catch a 30footer at the wedge?
Goatee, wetsuit cap, green camo-style fish board with a padded deck? Usually paddles out at Dog Beach Jetty with another old kneerider who has super long hair and a really big mouth?
Anyone remember in the 70's, an ancient geezer would come to the pier in a Mercedes. He'd let the "groms" drag his long board to the water. In return, the punks could write crap on his ride with wax. 1st time ever to write Grom. Have never vocalized it tho.
I support all forms of wave riding, and I find it a shame too many people refuse to experiment with other forms. That said, Seldom, whats the deal with body boarders not riding drop knee anymore? I feel like I never see it around my parts... Has it been deemed uncool?
Not uncool in my book. There's a couple guys around here that kill it on the knee...big hacks, off the lip type stuff, etc. Definitely not nommon to see, but they're around. I've always struggled with it, but I'm putting more focus into it to at least become efficient. Hope you fellers got some today.
Seldom, I believe we may be in a similar place. However, I see no drop knee. If I see a dude doing drop knee I will assume its you.
though popularized by spongers drop-knee is also a surfing move. show me a guy who can tunnel-ride a longboard and i'll show you a drop-knee-er. (they would be one and the same).
