hey guys, this flat spell is killing me and I've been looking around for a road trip to obx but can't decide where. I've always scored at the Lighthouse bc it picks up any ole swell direction it seems but this saturday is a toss up between Ocracoke/Frisco (which might be better on this ghost of a chance SSW swell that's supposed to fill in or Rodanthe/Avon/Buxton for a N/NE swell. The only problem is the Diamond Shoals buoy seems to be down! Now if I had the DS data I'd know exactly where to go. any help advice from you locals would be great. I always travel solo with a dog (or 2!) so I won't be bombarding any breaks with all my homies so you can rest easy knowing that if you help me I'll only bring the stoke (and maybe some smoke) to your homebreaks! love and baseketball to all! -BBG http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41025 http://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/rodanthe-north-carolina http://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/frisco-north-carolina http://www.obxsurfinfo.com/surf-reports/ocracoke-surf-report/
and yea I know it's gonna be tiny all over but OBX tiny is at least rideable! esp with the quiver ill be bringing!
yup and I totally plan on doing that...If it works out like in my imagination I'll come up from the south and hit frisco early as I can (seems the SSW swell will taper off by mid day) and then work my way up to east facing points further North for some post-lunch incoming high tide surf around Avon/Rodanthez. I've never been skunked before but not having the buoy up is making me worry. bla bla bla...
really my question was pointed at SWELLINFO peeps...how can you guys predict a SSW swell with NO Diamond Shoals data? help
just a warning, frisco is hard to score well for non locals, its shifty and might leave you with your dik in your hand not saying it cant be done, just counting on frisco is like counting on a slot machine
that's why I usually ride my 10' in unfamiliar waters. I like to be at least as big as the men in grey suits swimming under me . and if that doesn't deter them my 2nd line of defense is that I have your avatar painted on the bottom of my board lee! sharks don't furk with Cash! (haha I wish)
oh yea? well sorry but I was joking about the drugs man, but hope to see some smiling faces up that way around that time. safe travels bro
i'm hoping I don't have to worry with frisco...when I get off the ferry Ima check the first spot there in OCracoke. if it's decent I'll just stay there. I'd rather spend a night in Ocracoke fighting off the milfs on vacation than being in buxton fighting off the rednecks with too much liquor on their breath... ha. I guess one would need to have been with me on my last trip to lighthouse to realize how funny that really is.
Hey babybaby, from the looks of it, the spot you're referring to on ocracoke is probably a good call. I've seen it work there on minimal SSW windswell days before. offshores and sunny should make for a real nice day.. Best of luck!
just got back. I missed the storms by a hair! but still was indeed eerie camping out in 35 mph winds friday night waiting for the ocracoke ferry while listening to the reports of carnage going down only 2 counties over in each direction. NC got hit hard.
http://www.wral.com/cleanup-begins-after-powerful-storms-tornadoes-batter-eastern-nc/13597049/ The surf ended up being a real surprise so I spent about 6 hrs in the water on saturday away from cell phones and news of the storm so I didn't know the extent of the damage until driving back this afternoon. Drove right by some major damage on US 264. A 2 story house was completely blown away. I was in shock at seeing that after being completely in surf bliss the entire 24 hrs prior. my heart goes out to those people I saw cleaning up what must've been there entire life.
dude I wish I had taken better vids/pics. I ended up picking a pal of mine up on the way to Ocracoke and, as I wrote before, we ended up camping out (more like bivouac-ed) right by the ferry terminal just after the major storms had blown thru - we stayed up til like 4am bc of the winds and all. So It was a sketchy start to the day as we boarded the ferry at 7 am with the NW winds howling still. I knew as the nautical miles rolled by that if the wind didn't die down soon our first stop in Ocracoke would be an offshore blown out waste of time. So we get off the ferry and make our way to check ocracokes first access. There was def swell in the water but at that hour and at that wind it was only able to muster a thigh high peeler every other sandbar so we decided to keep making our way up to hatteras where and when I hoped the wind and swell would line up better. we jet down to the ferry and luckily are the last car on. tide was low and it seemed to take the ferry forever this time to make the trip over to hatteras village. we finally get there and wolf down some food we had brought along and jetted over to check the frisco pier. It was a longboarders dream. thigh/waist to stomach high peelers with the bare hint of an offshore wind, crystal clear water and slowly fading SSW swell lines rolling in. We surfed there for 2 hours or so and noticed that the swell was dropping so hopped back in the jalopey for the short ride over to the east side to check the lighthouse. Lighthouse was all lit up. Still slightly offshore wind and chest to shoulder high crumblers were peeling down the beach.. The peak seemd to have shifted a bit off the jetty this time from a month ago when I was there last but was producing the classic stacked up wave that people drive all day and night for. I got smacked around a bit, made some hair-brained attempts at some lefts while dodging a pretty good size crowd of kids from somewhere on Spring break and even managed to get a screamer that actually went RIGHT for once. Yea all and all it was a blast.
did they ever. lizbethcity got slanged. worse still todays' bad news from arkansas. beware the sky when it reaches toward earth...
