saying 'Hi" when paddling out

oh man! so many uppity groms now...was surfing w/ one (that i know well) the other day. he paddled around another guy for a wave & said, "i have priority!" i looked him in the eye & took off. paddling back out, i told him that he may have been in position, but he didn't have priority.
same thing would've happened to me if i'd tried that as a grom. but i never did, b/c i knew my place.

 

Yea maybe Im a **** too because I rarely say anything to anyone. I will answer when spoken to but I keep it short and move away as fast as possible. I think it is because if we are close enough to speak without yelling we will eventually be paddling for the same wave and that is something that I would like to avoid.
What really bothers me is when 2 women get out there and start gabbing away about a bunch of BS that no one cares about. Trust me nobody cares about your new curtains.

 

Manners have no age limit or minimum. I have had great vibes with kids, old farts (like me or even older, imagine that), aspiring pros, and cholos from Miami. I give everyone a smile and a nod, just to size them up, just to invite them to be cool. They have to earn my disrespect, but some do. It does backfire once in a while. At the Juno Pier, I was nice to some Miami kook, and all he did was try to be my best friend out in the lineup as he blew wave after wave after wave. People started wondering if I brought him with me. No good deed goes unpunished. When I get the stink eye I pretend he's my long lost buddy: "Hey Man. GOOD TO SEE YOU OUT HERE, WHEN IS HIGH TIDE, IS IT GETTING BETTER, WOW, LOOK AT THE CROWD". That really pisses them off.

I usually say hi, unless I'm feeling some bad vibes, maaaan. I'm not here to harsh any mellows, though some mellows do deserve a harshin'.

It's nice seeing the same faces out there, especially as I'm usually rolling solo... I agree that the older guys are much more amenable to salutations. Certainly more so than the Al-Merrick hipsters whose girlfriends came to take pictures of them from the beach.

I salute you old guys. Keeping things in perspective, surfing alone in the winter... in their 50's/60's. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

 

A lot of it has to do with the situation. I rarely say hi first but will chat if somebody else starts a convo. If, however, i'm out alone and the beach is empty and somebody paddles out where I am, they WILL get vibed from the beginning.

As misanthropic as I am, I try to treat everyone as an individual and give them a chance(with the exception of painfully obvious douche-bags, Earth haters, materialists, and other assorted jetsam worthy of disdain)...I find the most pleasant interactions w/ strangers occurr off the beaten path...ie/passers-by on a remote trail, one or two other dudes in a cold winter lineup, rogue beach wanderers in the off season who you end up puffing cheeb with somehow...so in short, I don't mind a what's up and a nod.

 

Dammit 757, you know I'm friendly until the fair-weather folks show up and paddle on top of everyone where we have been surfing through all the s*** storms (30 mph NE and 20 degrees), it gets warmer and all of a sudden everyone is a ripper if only the waves were better. Oh shut the F up! I've had more words with people than I've had in a while (probably from the people now in the water...). BTW, you're one of the few folks I see here in Vb that actually surfs, I don't hate and actually goes out when there is something to surf.

Taking into consideration what 757 has said on this forum, I am out googly dohappily surfing one fine December day. Low and behold, there is this other chap surfing that I have seen out there a bunch of times. I am paddling back following my latest, sickest ride of all time since I could do no less. I am paddling by, look over at him and in my usual, just gonna blurt something out self that everyone in Vb hates (I'm that guy, sorry I didn't tell you to suck it world). I say, what are you, the 757 surfer? The look of surprise said it all. YES! I found you!

I told him how I built that break with my bare hands and he better defend it from the tourons and fishermen that would inevitably show up in the warm weather. I spotted them from 10 blocks away. You know when you see that character on the beach. The one who just walked past 5 empty breaks to paddle next to you and get all high and mighty yet be unable to catch anything with a longboard but I'm doing fine with a short? Yeah...them

757, do you pick up the trash on the beach when entering/exiting the water to surf? Noo, I am not talking about the people, but I wish I was. Some disgusting creatures we have round these parts. Please don't litter on the beach. I don't like that and neither does the community. Thank you. rant over. 757, get yo ass in the water later. Off at 5. I see good size n chop out there.

Consider me guilty as charged. I rarely surf outside of walking distance or a short bicycle ride from my house. My town has a pretty tight nit local crew......the regulars all know one another. Even if we don't all like each other we know who's who. Unfortunately our town is a tourist trap most of the year and even in the off-season we are over run by crowds every time the waves are even remotely rideable. I'll be chatty with people I actually know in the water but if I don't know you I'm not going to have much to say. I'll be polite but don't expect much more. I'm there to get a few rides before going back to reality and if I don't recognize you I'm waiting for you to prove you are competent and not a danger to be around.

 

I'm a total nightmare in the water. One time, this lawyer-looking guy dropped in on me and dinged my board good. I paddled over to him and punched him in the face, then I took at my knife and cut his leash and told him to go back to the valley. Then me and my buds caught up to him at the shower and were giving him a good beating until the local surf guru showed up and kicked all our a$$es.

and i'm still the sheriff" which of course they haven't been around at all and they should instead assume their

than there HAVE BEEN ALL WINTER! yeah these types can grate on me….

 

I usually give folks a "whassup" if they're next to me, especially when I first paddle out. A lot of time people - especially those under 30 - seem shocked. That's one of the good things about getting older. No need for any more frontin'.

It's actually really weird and bizarre behavior to be within speaking distance of someone enjoying the same activity as you and not at least say "hello." I mean, think about that. It's bizarre.
