The thread title reminded me of those booklets one sees at a diner or a Cracker Barrel. Each with highlights, people, and things (cars, TV show, music, etc.) from a particular year - in this case 1954. Until then, it had been thought impossible for man to break the 4 minute mile. Later, Jim Ryun's world record of 3:51.1 in 1967 lasted for 8 years. An amazing runner from Kansas. I remember him from when I was a kid. I don't think he ever won an Olympic gold medal.
nope, nor did bannister. in fact, i don't think bannister ever medaled at all. at least ryun got a silver.
