Because they do not understand the east coast, time & again. Yah, it's flat out there today. The cams are looking like Lake Atlantic. It is what it is. But here's Surfline's fucast for mid-week: "Another round of SSW windswell will take hold Tuesday into the middle of next week. This will be biggest around LI due to the direction with smaller size for NJ through MD." Huh...? Same fucast for Long Island to the Virginia state line...? Can they get any more massively generalized for breaks that vary greatly in what they do with swell or no swell? Surfline's 'info' covers from Long Island to Assateague. That's approx 220 miles as the seagull flies. Whereas the distance from San Diego to LA is approx 120 miles. And yet Surfline's fucast in that span of coastline is parsed into many breaks with details. Surfline always gives the east coast short shrift when it comes to the fucast. They get all hyped about storm swell, which is nearly impossible to call (you just gotta be there waiting & hit it when it cleans up) and they can't call that either btw. They don't even seem to realize that the best waves on our coast are actually in the winter. It's funny to see those Surfline after-the-fact photo-articles on how awesome it was in Jerz this winter, as if they were all on top of the situation & were calling the swells, when in point of fact Surfline proved that they weren't even in the ballpark when it comes to predicting incoming swell for those breaks. Yah, yah, I get it, Cali has the best waves, reef versus sand, blah blah blah. So what. Surfline's fucasts for the east coast are usually ostrich material. If there is a silver lining to this misinformation, it's that it keeps some of the madding crowds in their living rooms instead of the ocean. Once again, the old saw holds true, if you're gonna do something, do it right. Just because it's 'free' doesn't give one the right to do a shiiiiite job of it. That's all I'm saying.
their coverage gets worse over time here, too. No more spotters checking the major breaks and calling in conditions...they've got the lead forecaster just calling it they see it from some HQ somewhere else. And more cameras down...but they're the only game in town when the cams work
Never been impressed. They seem to know how to predict the big long period swells found around the world from distant storms. Unfortunately we don't get many of those on the EC They have trouble with the mid and near shore storms that create a lot of swell here. I've seen them call NJ 2-3 foot many times when it's head high. I don't think they are using Hawaiian scale either in their forecast Then again, all I have to do is walk up to the beach to look, so I'm not too worried.
exactly. just another example of how the surf industry, esp. in southern california, is one big incestuous circle jerk. they cater to only themselves & care only about themselves, but expect us all to buy into their marketing & hype.
….(and along came Mary)….yeah;urite. til the internet showed up. it slays dragons like me (and you) who believe in truth, justice, and the american way.
Yeah, surfline considers the entire state of South Carolina "one break". Basically, they take the folly beach are forecast and call it what it is.... Surfline just neglects the east coast, thats all that is. They actually pay eye ballers every day, all over CA and HI to give "Bird Man" reports, which is helpful.... But when they look at their paid memberships and stuff, and when 95% are on the west coast and HI, they focus on where the money is..... I would assume that it's why there are only a hand full of guys from the west coast on this site.... If you ever want to see a bunch of angry as$ surfers, WAY worse than our montley crew over here, take a peak at the surfer mag forums one day.... I don't think they really censor it much, but people be roasting each other.... I mean, you can't even make any kind of statement without 645 people biting your head off within seconds. And they are all from the west coast and HI.... Mention that you are from the east coast, and you will generally get a response like, ohh have fun in your kidding pool kook. There is no beach in South Carolina, ya landlocked tool bag. And god forbid you are a sponger, after 245 instantaneous flamings, you will get banned immediately. Makes us look like saints. Its crazy man.... and they are all the surfliners.
I like surfline when I wanna get a general idea of what it's gonna be like in 17 days... Other then that, it sucks. Swellinfo's setup is just the best. The chart, the red and the green and all those Christmas colors... Surfline is hard to navigate, and Swellinfo is just more accurate anyway. Anyone who says they like Surfline secretly checks Swellinfo when it's big.
I think surfline is great, just don't use it for surf forecasts.every time I checked it,it would say poor to fair on a day like doomsday when it was the swell of the century.then when its 2 ft and onshore, itll say fair to good conditions.blasphemy!!! I just like to check the live cams and the swell stories.that is all
Yeah I agree with you about the cams, they're great. I like to watch the Nazare cam when its 40+ feet.
I agree. But on the other hand, which I have mentioned to Micah, I think that swellinfo is by FAR the best tool for people that live on the east coast. I feel that it is like that, because the guy who runs the site is from the east coast. All the people, over all the years that give him feedback, good, bad, whiny about the reports have made it a very, very accurate model but these people are ALL from the east coast. I mean, when is the last time you have had a guy from the west coast make a post about the swell data on this site? I don't think ever. They just use the forums. However, when I lived out west, I would usually use swellinfo for the forum mostly. For whatever reason, the wind data and the over all "green is good" "blue is okay" and "red is bad" would not really be that accurate. For me anyway. I would get back from sessions every day, sheet glass, almost perfect conditions, and for some reason, the swellinfo forecasting tools would read the wind data as red or blue.... So, it was pretty accurate with regards to size, but I just think that the west coast is somewhat neglected, because there aren't 2,000 users from the west coast chiming in every time there is a discrepancy in the data. I mean, look at the west coast forum. There would be weeks that went by with not one post and stuff.... So, I definitely would say that swellinfo is THE source for swell information on the entire eastern seaboard... And I think surfline does the exact opposite as I would say. They DRASTICALLY neglect the east coast as a whole. Using huge regional forecast areas. I think because surflines users are so westcoast heavy, and there are obviously more surfers and wave out there, that they focus on that user group. Just my thoughts. Not being a negative nancy, I just feel like 6 out of 7 days per week out there had conditions that guys on the east coast could consider epic to perfect and the data models would be blue and green....
Surfline is nothing but a fkn hero-worship website. I just wanna see surf, I don't give a flying fk through a rolling donut about who they think is "cool" this month (RE: "Social Absorption").
I love kooks who go out anyway because they're conditioned if it says waves even if there's no swell.
the guys at www.surfnewsnetwork.com have it soooooo dialed for the Islands, they deserve a medal if their expertise could be outsourced, yall would be stoked
Surfline continues to be a gigantic CaliforniASS: check out their page that is 'travel' for Ocean City, MD. It lists the information for Ft. Story & VB. It's been this way for, oh, years now. The other good one, and there are many others, is their 'fucast' for Barbados. Select Barbados and you get to choose from ....Barbados! It's an island, a-holes, is this news? Uh, that would mean the swell at South Point is TOTALLY effing different from Soup Bowl and TOTALLY different from Duppies. I really, really hope I don't get an infarcshun for hatin' on morons who deserve the spew & charge subscribers for same. Vote for Yankee in my bid for HOTY14, institutional-division.
surfline is also based out of southern california. My guess is swellinfo is outta the east somewhere. Not defending them, just stating the fact. I dont check that site ever.
Maybe walkingonh2o can chime in here if he isn't busy in wti666's salad tossing vehicular mode of transport to their own dimension.
