I agree with you steel worker. My threshold for skippage is about chest high plus and the green symbol. If your lucky to be salaried employee, like I, then all I have to do is work 15 mins and I get paid for the entire day! No doubt! Hey I got a question for you. It seemed like this time the last two years at my home break it was much better. The swells were similar, normal small summer time types, but the setup at the shore has just been constant shorebreak, when weather wise it all matches up for a nice little wave. It's all good because there are spots a ways down the street that are breaking as good as mine was last year, so I just have to travel a little more. Is the replenishment that was done last year the cause of this? Or is it just the fact a solid bar has not built up yet. I can't believe the difference, it just seems really drastic. I know that beachbreak spots seem to change a bit, but this just seems different. What do you think?
Not sure where you are... But if there was replenishment in your area, then yeah, that could play a big part of it. The general trend that I've seen with replenishment, is they dump a bunch of sand down, make the beach wider... But what it does to the surf zone is makes it, where it goes from shallow water to dropping off steeply to deep water. And, this is the ingredient for shorebreak. If your familiar with Rehoboth Beach, the replenishment there absolutely killed the surf. The waves just surge on to the beach. Also, for the general beach breaks in Delmarva, the sand bars struggle in summer time. What happens is we get the general weak, south long shore current. This builds the beaches up, and flattens out the slope. When we get a strong wind swell event, it takes the sand from the beach and brings it offshore to form the bars.
thanks I never get up to rehobeth, but I can imagine. Replenishment was done here last fall, and after what you said, I'd say it's safe to say that is probably the cause. I appreciate the info, I moved to the shore four years ago, and I had no idea the impact replenishment has on the breaks. I think it was done the first year I was here too, I just wasn't familiar enough with the ocean to notice the changes. After being in the water year round for a few you really start to notice when the weather doesn't effect the waves as it usually does. Keep your hopes up for this week!
yeah it seems like 65th st. and up = beat. BUT at some spots downtown it was much better (or at least not shorebreak). This time of the year with these small swells the tide seems to play a bigger factor in the quality of the break also.... so if its still trash uptown this week, go scope it out, cuz the past few times I found it breakin right down the street... just something for you to keep in mind.
I'm going insane. Every time there are waves forecast within' the week, the day before it shifts. It doesn't even look like it's worth waking up early tomorrow morning anymore. I'm a sad panda.
there should be some clean, rideable wave for the morning incoming tide. hit up the better south swell spots.
