funny thing - over my 50 year surfing career the amount of really good swimmers who could also surf well i could count on one hand. shoutout to critter and swifty (i thought it was a hen mallard…honest).
yea, it's sad, but most surfers today swim like bricks. i remember when i was a grom & doing some swim training to get ready for my first year lifeguard tryout & my dad told me i "swim like a surfer" & didn't mean it as a compliment. it pains me when i see surfers try to do distance swims now. so awkward. i get funny looks when i choose to bodysurf a decent day around here. people just don't get it.
True that. I must admit, for over a decade, when I enter the ocean, it is usually on a surfboard, so I feel like I could paddle to europe from here fairly easily on my board... But now, the water is warm and its flat, those first few swims feel awkward. I do feel like a brick. It feel so un-natural to be out there without a board. Luckily, my daughter is 2 going on 3, so we take her in the pool all the time. I do a few laps and I shake off the cob webs. We started swim lessons in San Diego for my daughter when she was about 5 months old. It was crazy. I was so scared the first time they wanted me to put her all the way under, but within a couple weeks, she knew how to hold her breath and stuff... But yeah, surfers get into bad habits because they don't spend enough time off their boards.
I make the calls And I got the skills I'm so pimp I swim in thousand dollar bills What NJ for life Word
also our swimming habits got blindsided by the invention of the leash…SEDUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY….i LOVE my leash but the swimming aspect of surfing hit a brick wall..(i still love my leash). but long ago surfers used to swim (like suckers to get the lost board) a lot. boy i'm old.
I cant sprint for shyt, running or swimming.when I was a kid all my friends lived pretty far away so I walked many many miles on end.lol I cant run for distance, but I could walk 15 miles without food or water, aslong as it isn't 90 degrees.i take my time on everything I do,whats the rush?i spent most of my childhood running from the cops lol,it was great training.the only time I ever been arrested was when I didn't run because I was tired of the bs.but I cleaned up my act, dont get in trouble, and now im just a typical working joe in amerikka
she's so hot, she doesn't even need to touch a board in the commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IjglMDYKqU - also still holds NCAA records (from '02) in the 1 fl & 1 bk (under :50! that would be respectable for a dude!) also check out Peirsol (poor quality) surfing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV393AGCW0A and body surfing with Brendan Hansen (another WR holder) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtMwtXrkLHM - doesn't hurt to know how to swim in these conditions...
one more Peirsol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq-LUHIPM4M without that Fly talent (although he never really competed it until his last trials and made it all the way to Finals) he does not make that wave... improve your paddle, endurance, and anaerobic power y'all. i'm not the best out on the board, but it is a shame to watch decent surfers to beginners lose waves because they can't paddle for shyte (even sadder when they don't make intuitive adjustments to make up for lack of paddle and/or power)
You're an idiot. I never understand your posts. You can go through your prior posts and see how you say one thing and than another at a different time. First I learned to surf a few years ago. Then, I've been surfing my whole life. You are definitely a "surfer" dude. You just said in the prior post that you would doggy paddle. So you doggy paddled from Sea Bright to Long Branch. I've never read posts that contained so much BS. You have diarrhea of the mouth. Please learn to swim before learning to surf. Treading water doesn't help 1/4 mile out when there is no one to help unless you expect our tax dollars to save your ass because you can only doggy paddle and tread water. Idiot.
ok sir.I hope u are at the same beach as me so u can rescue me when I try to surf,i can use ur help.im just happy theres folks like u out there whos willing to rescue a brave soul such as me. Gregg noll was a shytty swimmer who doggy paddled in from 4th reef pipe, yes I said 4th reef after wipeout with no board.and I do believe knoll would be considered a kook by ur standards.heres da vid for u to watch son.
Ok. I'll call you Greg Noll now, lol. Doesn't matter if he got in. It's still stupid to be in the ocean in rough conditions and only know how to doggy paddle, alright Greg. Just worry about yourself and stop finding and quoting professional surfers or legends. It's feels like's all your own stories come from other surfers youtube videos. Yes, I would save you if you were near me. I think people are aholes if they don't do anything. It just shocks me that people relay so heavily on a surfboard and don't know how to swim. It's just dumb. I was just suggesting that you learn to swim instead of putting someone elses life in danger who may try to save you.
ok kid u win the argument.i don't know how to swim or walk or even talk.all my quotes come from youtube videos,u got me.oh yea I forgot to mention, like 15 years ago I was a lifeguard, certified at the ymca in woodbridge on rt9.maybe u misinterpreted my post, idk,I don't care.im not a little kid.i do smoke heavy amounts of weapons grade maryjuhana,my memory isn't the greatest.but il say something and a few months later a vid will come out with slater or whoever and say the exact same thing I said. I surf alone 99% of the time and rescued countless children like yourself.it doesn't make me butthurt like yourself,I don't mind doing good deeds.not to mention how I always surf leashless.when I said "I used to be one of those ppl" im referring to 20 yrs ago.i didn't grow up near the ocean, lived far from it,was scared shytless as a kid.then about 12 yrs ago I moved toward the water, which I hate, summer traffic, etc.I trained myself pretty hard by myself over the last 10 yrs.it has nothing to do with strength or agility, more of a mindset. heres a few excercises for u and maybe u can be a waterman like me someday. go to the beach, swim out as far as possible til ur completely exhausted.if u did this right,u should be in 20ft deep water, maybe more.now exhale underwater and sit at the bottom aslong as u can.now u should be dying for a breath.pop up take a breath and exhale underwater again.do this 10x and then swim parallel to the beach as far as u can and repeat the underwater dive excercizes.when u can do this over and over u can handle yourself in heavyier situations.dont worry youngster, one day u can be half as good as me if u push yourself hard enough.now go do your homework before your parents ground you and take away your gopro
100% agree...the leash destroyed the water skills of surfers, both swimming & bodysurfing. it sounds like such a meathead kind of thing, but one of the reasons i like to surf w/out a leash, esp. when the water is warmer in the summer (& hence, the waves are smaller), is b/c it's a better workout. waist high & mushy/blown out? let me go surf sans leash. consequences are low & i'll prob. have to do a few laps if i get overly cocky & lose my board. then, when the surf is actually good & my leash breaks or the velcro comes undone, i'll be a lot more comfortable swimming around in the line up, whether through the impact zone to my board or out the back to the boat if i'm on a trip somewhere. swimming has become a vastly underrated skill for surfers. i'm really thankful my parents had the forethought to put me in one of those those infant swimming programs.
the reason is we don 't need it. strange animals as we are we spend all day in the water with no use for swimming…..oceanic phonys..if you will…or not.
Yes it's an ironic thing, however, think of the average boater out there. They may have PFDs on hand but if things got hairy on their vessel could they even tread water in that PFD and keep head above the swell in a current?
lmao. Doggy-paddle = waterman. I have to see where you got your last quote from, woodbridge waterman. I'm in my 30's and find it crazy that you don't know how to swim (just doggy-paddle at your age). Just hope you don't lose your only floation device and tread water in the same spot until someone saves you. I would still save you still though. I always help someone who is in trouble. I'm just pointing out the obvious. I'm not trying to be a ****.
who here swam on the swim team in HS? it doesnt make you a waterman, but it does give you a background many do not have
