According to the Animal Planet channel, there's a new predator of which to beware. Humboldt Squid. There's a show on a 7 tonite called "Man Eating Super Squid". I saw it a couple days ago. Sharks and tuna are the fish that keep them in check. With the over fishing of those 2, the squids are out of control. they're smart. Seems like the plan of attack with them is to have one start changing colors in front of the meal, and then it's buddies grab it, and drag it down while eating it with their sharp beaks. I was thinking, too bad for the Pacific surfer. Radiated water and smart alien gangstas to worry about. There's map shown and those bad boys are also on the east coast. So here we have no waves and will be chewed by spineless entities with their sharp peckers.
they always have some crazy stuff on animal planet.i seen this video the otherday lol,was the most epic wildlife fight I have ever seen.lions lay down as a bunch of those big buffalo looking things with the horns, kinda like rams, come strolling by,the jet out and grab the baby and toss it in the water.as their fighting for it,an alligator tries to take it.the lions get the buffalo, then like 50 buffalos came charging in.its like the parents of the young buffalo went to get back up(smart animals).anyway the buffs come charging in,they toss a lion 15 feet in the air with their horns, and they ended up rescueing the baby buffalo.it was some cool shyt lol
Any suggestions for restaurants in central California that have Humboldt Squid? And has anyone been bitten by one yet?
Yeah those squiddies are pretty nasty. Smart too. Video of a diver that had been attacked, he thought it may have been coordinated. One in front of him changing colors, acting all lovely and whimsical, meanwhile his buddies came in from the sides, few trying to drag him down further from the feet. Not quite as coordinated as orca pods...but for an invertebrate....I'd give them some serious credit. Not how I'd want to go out. Pulled down, blowing eardrums whilst getting munched on by a bunch of demonic color changing hate machines with beaks. Sounds like it belongs in the Odyssey.
If anyone was bitten, you'd know it. Apparently those beaks have bite pressure enough to amputate limbs with one shot, namely hands.
Animal Planet sold out, just like Discovery, History, Nat Geo, all the channels that used to make tv actually worth watching. Didn't see the squid episode, but I do know they have one coming up on wolves, in which they perpetuate the man-eating ruthless beast hide your kids stereotype. Through their sensationalist quest for ratings, they're keeping myths alive for one of the most misunderstood and hated species in North America. And contrary to what one might think, wolves cannot withstand any more fuel added on to this fire. I know a lot of you guys probably read what I say about wolves and think I'm psychotic...if that's the case, do some objective research and you'll see why the situation is so sensitive. On a lighter note, saw a different documentary on these squid and they don't play, definitely smart, definitely will wreck shop.
Octopus has a more advanced nervous system for feeling pain than a fish. It's theorized they can actually feel pain since they have so many more receptors that fish are missing.
Not necessarily wildlands in CT, but we have some good hiking and the northern corners of the state are pretty rural. Big patch of woods just east of me in the Guilford area. No wolves(obviously) but plenty of coyotes...I've always been an ecology guy. Funny this came up b/c during my morning Ed Abbey reading I stumbled upon his snippet about how a man could be a lover of wilderness without ever having step foot out of the city, how just knowing it's there brings peace of mind. As an aside, I was lucky enough to encounter a wolf once, in a western state that has no 'official' wolf population(I will not name the state). And there's no way it was a coyote, I know my coyotes and this guy was about twice the size as my 75 pound Husky. It emerged from a clearing and looked me dead in the eyes, a few seconds later it just walked off. Sounds so cliche, but that 'wild green fire' in his eyes that Aldo Leopold described(and many others after) is real, and pierces right though you. I'm very lucky to have experienced that. What's going on in the Northern Rockies isn't wildlife management, it's all out war. These low life phucks that hunt wolves are so deranged they try and target packs in National Parks...like the one from Yellowstone that they lured out with a distressed pup call then mutilated as they dragged it behind a car.
Yeah, that's crazy... I do miss the mountains in MD and PA. I used to find a lot of solace in them as a kid. Southern CA was just desert hills with not much life. Spent time in Big Bear, but only for snowboarding... Down here in SC, there is a ton of wild life. There is a little island in the middle of the bridge that is cool to walk around on, but with nothing but sea level elevation, I can never feed my hunger for a nice mountain hike. Wouldn't trade life by the sea for it, but as life gets busier, I wish I could find time to get away from things and just get lost in the woods. We used to camp in CA, but it was so lame. There was a campground in North County right on the beach, but the I-5 was visible. Went to some other spots around some lakes, but it was lame too. Individual little rental sites with tons of people around... Defeated the purpose, but my wife enjoyed the "outdoors" feeling.
I think a lot of us up here would say that's the beauty of the northeast. Not the highest mountains, not the biggest/most consistent waves, but you could get a relatively solid mountain and ocean experience in the same day if you time it right.
Yeah the wolves are pretty awesome. Plenty of sightings in northern new england. Elusive, but they are there. As are these buggers That's in NH. NH F&G won't acknowledge it, as they are supposedly extinct, and it would create a giant clusterf*** for them (they'd have to do some serious work for a change). There have been more and more hunter tree cams catching them walking by. These aren't little guys either. There are packs (grey and timber) up in NH. Past Conway, although people have seen them regularly in the lake winni area. Zero fear of humans. Here's NH F&G response to wolves: Asked why New Hampshire Fish and Game doesn’t recognize the presence of wild wolves in the state, she said, “Fish and Game does a great job, but they do not have enough people or funds to manage another species.” So....we have no wolves apparently. Except the grey and the eastern timber wolf....and the mountain lions that also don't exist.
I've heard about many a mountain lion sighting in northern NE, I believe they're there. Was that your camera/pic btw? Definitely a mountain lion.
I've been diving and stared down a squid before. It wasnt a humbolt and it wasnt a coordinated attack attempt, but i could tell it was watching me as i was watching it.
I like to think of myself as a one man wolf pack, hunting shart hunters and banging hookers. I went to Hershey park zoo one time and seen the wolves through the fence and immediately thought this fence ain't big enough, way bigger than I had imagined. New found respect after seeing them. An animal like that should never be caged. Mountain lions are pretty awesome, I remember hearing on a show they're the toughest pound for pound of the the big cats. There are mountain lions taking out dogs, horses and even a couple buffalo, or American bison if you wanna be a **** about it, out in South Dakota on my wife's land. Whenever I'm there I use extreme caution at night and when in the pastures.
No not my camera. Plenty of shots of them out there though, more and more frequent in hunting cams. He's a big boy, no doubt about it. Would not want to be on the business end of that.
