Wow, sure looks like I hit a major nerve with The Orange Gnome. First, you claim this: Then, in response to the "flat rocker" theory I stated, you responded: So, which is it? First you state that your ripped-off airplane wing from the Spruce Goose is State Of The Art because of it's "9 feet of extremely flat rocker", then you immediately contradict yourself by stating that the theory of flat rocker and full outline is "shonky" (whatever the fk that means). Way to go, Einstein. Pretty damning statement from somebody that doesn't know a damn thing about me.
Royboy, KR seems to have been around the block a time or two and he's not a pompous bro of any sort. Heck, if he tolerated me he's gotta be pretty easygoing! Dude knows his surf.
Not at all, I'm merely answering factually. The first premise of your argument ( namely that I claim that my board is state of the art because of its extremely flat rocker) is false. I made no such claim. However I do say that my board has nine feet of extremely flat rocker. I am in no way contradicting myself by saying that the theory of 'flat rocker with parallel rails in planshape is fastest' is shonky while riding and making boards with extremely flat rocker sections. The theory which I am criticising contains two requirements i.e. flat rocker AND parallel rails... my board has only one of those features. Furthermore I made no claim about the behaviour of flat rocker, I merely stated that my board has a 9 foot section of extremely flat rocker. I haven't gone into the reasons why in my opinion the theory of flat rocker and parallel rails being fastest is shonky. I can do so if you like. The statement is based on the fact that you watched a video of a board which is very fast ( and was one of only a couple out of 40 plus that day able to make the first section, the other being a shortboard ridden by a pro) and then suggested that the board is slow due to rocker and rail based 'pushing water' issues. Your comments revealed some of your thinking processes, so I do know something about you.
I'm just curious as to the dishonest part of his review? It merely looks like the wave and the board dont mix. I'm sure that board is very hard to turn especially with that monster fin, but wasnt that an intended design characteristic? I just dont see how he was telling any untruths. He actually was very positive about the whole thing. I bet on a rolly wave like makaha, or a long point break it would get a much better review. I still say theres a bit to much rocker for all intended purposes, but we've had this discussion before roy.
Just making an observation, sorry if I hurt your feelers there bud. I still think a 5'6" twin keel fish would go a lot faster and displace a heck of a lot less water. But I'm not into shaping Tom Blake-style 1930's redwood planks, either.
It's very easy to turn as many people who have ridden it have stated. Ease of turning was an intended design characteristic. Rarick makes it hard to turn by turning from too far back on the tail, in spite of clear advice regarding the riding position. Changing one's surfing habits to suit a new design can take more than just half a dozen rides, yet he blames the board rather than his own learning curve. She's an excellent all rounder, actually, so no specific conditions are required. It's a matter of demonstrable fact that the rocker is low to moderate when compared with other longboards. Saying otherwise is simply false. .
Maybe modern high performance lb's, but throw it next to a more classic designed lb and i'd say yours is pushing a bit more than average. Honestly i dont care that much. You say it rocks and i've never ridden it, so i cant say much on any of that. Just appearance alone.
We would all be a lot better off if we just admitted that Roy knows EVERYTHING about surfboards, builds the best boards in the history of the universe and should be appointed Queen of the World! The rest of us are sheep blinded by what Slater and the surf industry/mags have told us to ride. Oh and for those that are new to this site or thread and do not want to read 112 pages of bullsh!t, that was sarcasm! Roy is a self obsessed tool who is too damn close minded to listen to anyone say a single negative word about his "art".
Way less rocker than 'hplb' boards and average to low side for classic noseriders. Hardly a basis for saying that the board has too much rocker for Hawaii... but it's not about the truth it's about who's who.
Exactly. But be careful when you say 'sheep' it inspires kiwis like gnome to perform obscene acts on bended knee. The gnome boards are slow moving crap. If they were any good at all surfers would be all over them, buying them, surfing them, posting up about them. The Internet unfortunately allows gnome to post, post, post ad nauseum his baseless claims of brilliant superiority over any other shaper on the planet. He posts edited videos of his dinosaur planks & then sings his own praises. Of course, it's a conspiracy that his planks aren't considered the finest in the sport. He's nuts. Delusional. Crazy. Loon material. If it weren't for the Internet no one would even know of this goober.
Awww man now I got the image of a bearded orange jump suited gnome butt banging a sheep in my head! Damn you Yankee
I'm not sayin it has to much rocker for hawaii...i personally think it appears to have to much rocker in general for a long board. Like i said personal opinion. You are entitle to design and make what you'd like. And i'm not arguing that. Im really just talkin boards. it interests me.
The amount of rocker in a board is something which can be measured, so opinion which is not based on measurement is of little use. When I say that the board has les rocker than most longboards and is in the low rockered range then it's a matter of measured and thus demonstrable, fact. Why would you persist in stating that it has too much rocker when measurements show that it has a low rocker when compared with other longboards? It doesn't make sense to cling to such erroneous beliefs. Keep in mind that appearance can be deceptive when it comes to rocker. Measurement is the key.
I go out for a night to entertain a rather spirited and riotous wahine and I return to see epic posts from rcarter and yankee. Good work buoys. Yo, leetymike, you think Royboy lathers his arks down with Axe Surf Waxe before sessions? He's got to. Randy must've been immune to the kookrodisiac. FLY A BANNER FOR DP STOKE ON THE EC IN A MATTER OF HOURS get a haircut hippie!!!!
Very nice looking board Roy, the fin looks strange but the woodwork is nice. Not worth the price you ask but I give credit where credit is due.
