So I always knew it would somehow come down to this, and I guess the decision time came a little earlier than I would've liked. Right now I have the choice to either go to Rutgers New Brunswick, or University of Hawaii at Manoa. I pretty much know exactly what I'm looking at (a better education at home in NJ, or a mediocre to worse one in paradise), but I still want to try and get as many perspectives as possible. I'm still undecided about my major, but my two big interests are Political Science with an Asian Studies minor, or Marine Biology. I'd like to have the option of going to either graduate or law school, so the quality/reputation of the university definitely matters to me, but I know each school has its strengths. Almost no one here knows anything about UHM, so if anybody has any experience with the school or its programs that would be great. I just kind of want to get an idea of what I'd be looking at comparatively.
do hawaii. surf. asian studies good idea as geo/pol world a'changin in dat direction. do post grad and employment in new jersey. always wear your leash.
if you like being poor major in marine biology. Hawaii at 18 is best move you can do, grad school in jerz if you want, like baddy said
My only concern is that University of Hawaii will keep me from getting into some of the better grad schools. If i do political science/asian studies i'd hope to continue at University of San Diego or somewhere on the west coast where they have good programs for that and I'm assuming Rutgers would just look better. I've also heard that most people don't graduate even from UHM in 4 years because the classes/administration at the school are so slow, but I can't really validate that
LMAO, just casually cruing swellinfo and i see "rutgers or hawaii" that shouldnt even be a question. U of H!
Hawaii. You can even do grad school there, too. They are home to the East-West Center, which is renowned for its research and advocacy in Pacific relations and diplomacy (http://www.eastwestcenter.org/about-ewc/mission-and-organization). For Marine Biology, you can't beat Hawaii. The biggest problem with Hawaii is cost and maybe lack of support from family and friends. But you're young, so take the chance. Of course, Rutgers is good, too. Either way, good luck with your decision. You can't go wrong with either.
Wow, talk about 2 hugely different choices. New Brunswick versus Oahu! If you are looking at Marine Biology, I can't see how you could go wrong with Hawaii. I would go to paradise.
Go to UH. Having grown up in NJ, lived in HI during my 20s, and now returned to NJ, I will say that moving to HI is the opportunity of a lifetime. You will get exposed to new cultures, meet incredible people, and have access to amazing waves. Anyone telling you that UH is a mediocre education is lying to you (see Ricky Grigg obituaries) and is likely wrapped up in the northeastern snobbery that over affects college choices and asserts that education is more about a name on a diploma than knowledge gained. It is very easy to come back to NJ, but as you grow older, it is difficult to make long distance moves. You will never regret the times you lived in HI; you will likely revisit that amazing place in your mind for years after you come back to NJ (if you ever do).
U of H would be a great choice for those subjects but be careful. When I left for college at 18 I was going pre law to be a lobbyist cause I had taken a senior trip to DC and seen some in action. I thought hell yeah getting paid to argue would be sweet! A year in and I decided to go pre med cause a girl I was dating like Chicago Hope and ER. Next year we were done and I was on to wanting to be a writer for Surfer and live the cool life. Got a letter back from them telling me their writers generally started out earning about $12,000 a year for a really good one (this was 1994 and even then that was crap) so after 4 1/2 years I graduated with a Business Degree which was my "declared" major on paper even with all the extra classes I had taken. Point is at your age you may not truly know what you want to do and if it turns out to be business or technology or some other profession which U of H is not well regarded for it can cause issues later if you want to go to grad school. And even if their is the snobbery in the work place (regardless of east, west, north or south) it's what you have to deal with in the real world so better keep that in mind while earning your degree. You can always get the degree, job, money and fame then buy your sweet pad in HI and live like a king. I would never make a choice on education based on location or waves.
why the **** is this even a question..i mean really live in the moment dik head and save tomorrow for the future.
dude merica is the **** and if you disagree you going to have to out drink me and out fight me, and after that if nothing is settled that is the american way. we are the future man and if you drive a hybrid just die.. as the future we need to drive the worst fuel efficient cars in example my car has a hemi..15mpg do i give any fuks...no... i mean bang hookers with out rubbers, play it risky. #yolo # big booty hoez
HOF for sure! All you young ones listen to this man, he knows of what he speaks! I would vote you in to that big white house in DC in a heart beat my Brotha! SandBlasters for President in 2016, FUK Hillary!
The school you go to will matter very much for the connections you will make. This goes for people and professionals in Hawaii and Jersey. If you are already, at your young age, a professional minded person, ready to chase internships and professional connections throughout your four years of school, then you should probably go to Rutgers. If you will likely spend your college just growing up more, while getting a college degree and still figuring out what you want to to do, then go to HI. Living in Hawaii will definitely be amazing, but if you are truly career minded, for law, you would be better off at Rutgers. I doubt you are truly career minded seeing as how Marine Biology and Poly-Sci and Asians are rather disparate studies. Nonetheless, if you get a degree in Marine Biology by 24, and still are interested in law, you can still pursue it, though it might take a bit more work. Good luck man. Either way, don't drink too much, don't take any serious drugs, and don't get herpes/knock a chick up.
Hawaii would be sick. You're young and not committed to a major yet so why not do it. The worst thing that can happen is you take some general courses and if you don't like it there just transfer to another school. It's easier to get in to some schools as a transfer as well. I didn't get into my first choice school and after a year I applied again as a transfer and got in easily. I doubt you'll regret living in Hawaii too so I'd say go for it.
so, I never knew slashdog was gay, but here we are. he is basically saying 'its not what you know, but who you blow', and he is right, kinda (for a faag). Find your own path son, networks can make you money, but you feel like a dirty whore as you go about making a 'living'..... do your own thing. I bet no one ever said 'man I wish I got less waves' on their deathbed cheers
Bro. Jerz or Hawaii? Serious questions only please. I've still yet to be asked by anyone in business once (employer, customer, colleague, etc) where I went to college unless they were talking about who I played collegiate athletics for. Not saying it doesn't matter in every field or profession but it's not the most important thing. Get the best grades you can and do well on GRE/GMAT/LSAT/MCAT and that will get you admitted to the graduate school you want to be at. You'll be happiest and most successful if you embrace a holistic view on your future rather than a myopic one based on status or what you'll look like on paper. There are dues you'll need to pay in every industry and line of work and no degree will exempt you from that. Where you went undergrad is so often forgotten by everyone, including you after the fact. Just don't have the only prevailing reminder of your alma mater experience be your grossly inflated monthly loan payment. Keep it reasonable on that end. If you go to the state uni of NJ you're gonna be surrounded by a predominance of Jerzans. That'd be enough to steer me clear.
Unless you have a clear path towards a career specifically in mind, college is a colossal waste of money. Go on a surf trip or get a job until you figure it out. Way too many kids going into serious debt or wasting their parent's retirement money only to graduate with a worthless degree and no job opportunities so they can work off that massive debt. How about a trade school or swing a hammer for a year. Learn a trade. College today isn't what it used to be cracked up to be.
This is the best advice you'll hear and you're not going to get it from your guidance counselor. Learn a trade. Work. Learn how the world works and how you can make money in a way that allows you to do what you want and live how you want to live.
be wary of those who talk down higher education. never listen to any opinion about college from someone who never went. dropouts ALWAYS bad mouth college. fact is higher education can set you so far ahead of your peers that even looking back is difficult. also some babes in college aren't there for the MRS. degree, they are actually going places and hitching your wagon to theirs could be a supreme accomplishment.
