Looks like they're looking at how to do it right across the harbor...

    http://www.rebuildbydesign.org/teams/scape/

The Marine Academy of Science and Technology is starting a collaboration with the NY Harbor School on Governor's Island. Both are marine-themed high schools with a strong science and tech emphasis. The Harbor School is one of the design teams working on this project. We need to start looking at things differently here, too.

Good stuff...didn't read the plan in it's entirety yet, but a quick skim and it looks pretty damn cool.

Also saw they discussed nitrogen runoff...absolutely amazes me how many kinds and the quantities of chemicals people dump on their yards...and the fact some highly destructive chemicals(ie/ malathion) are available to the general public, the majority of which is borderline retarded.

Yes, frightening isn't it? And these borderline retards who have access to all of this toxic crap will look at you like you're retarded if you suggest some less poisonous alternative.

Yup, or even worse when I tell them I don't use any fertilizer, grub-ex, or any of that crap. But I have a lot of birds that come to my yard to feed on the juicy grubs:cool:

I've also stopped using Roundup...which I only used sparingly on cracks in the driveway, but I'm gonna try some home made vinegar based weed killing formulas.

whats funny is that the birds and critters eating the grubs, and the grubs them selves naturally aerate the ground which means you don't have to really use the thatch rake or aerate every year. people who use chemicals in there yards end up having to spend more money and time maintaining it. unless they have a landscaper.

Exactly. And man I get quite the variety of birds in the yard, among other things.

roundup is one of the most evil chemical compounds available, its amazing to me how many people think it is harmless. That massive fish-kill a few weeks ago seems like it was possibly caused by runoff

Vinegar + salt + dishwashing liquid. It works but you may have to reapply it.

Nah man it's one of my favorite Ed Abbey books...one of his collections of essays. Is it a game of thrones thing too?

Never watched it before. My wife's parents were in town last week and we ended up watching the most recent episode with them. They were raving about it, so I got every episode of every season and have been running it through the HDMI port to the TV. We are on season 1, episode 5... cool show. Too much going on. I am already asking my wife questions every five minutes, like WTF are they talking about? That girl is banging her brother and her brother killed their dad? WTF?

Interesting. So far im into it, and usually I never watch that ferry tale, midevil kinda crap

We don't use lawn chemicals. For garden fertilizer, it's compost. Besides, if I killed all the "weeds", there'd be very little green left in our yard.

People either don't know any better or just don't care about the overall environmental impact of what they do. Particularly in the springtime, you'll see folks coming out of Home Depot and Loews with carts full of large bags and jugs of yard chemicals: fertilizers, pesticides, blends combining both.
Along a street in our neighborhood, there are four yards that seem to compete with each other on who has the greenest grass and brightest flowers. When jogging past these homes along "Monsanto Row", the smell of yard chemicals can be very noticeable.

In many of the neighborhoods in our area, there are ponds that were created by the developers. They became part of the area's drainage system and are filled by rain runoff - runoff containing yard chemicals, vehicle fluids, solvents, road kill slop, drunks' vomit, animal sh*t, etc....you get the picture. During the summer. I'll see kids swimming in the larger ponds. Homes along these chemical/bacteria soup pits are sometimes listed as "waterfront" property. It's nuts.
