Progressive? I'm a gun toting libertarian. I suppose that just means I'm 100% for a gay married couple to defend their pot plans with AR15s, and not be taxed for any of it. Call me crazy, I can't stand progressives.
I know what we need, let's dig the "North Vs. South" thread up from the ashes. Or we can start a new thread of "America's Worst City" in a march madness bracket style contest. You never know, per 100,000 people, we may see amazing things from Gary Indiana, East St. Louis or even Compton... But as long as we keep Detroit, Baltimore, Philly and Washington D.C. in separate brackets, I would assume to see a predictable final four... And let's be clear everyone... The few noble, honorable, visionaries left in North East are flocking to the South in record number's to seek shelter from the doldrums of a cold, permissive, liberal region that was tapped of all valuable resources some time ago. We welcome them with open arms. They now enjoy incredible cuisine, impressive weather, progressive thought and more bountiful land. The south is now and has been for sometime the definition of superiority. A superiorty that everyone is welcome to be a part of. The cold, grey, boring art, writings and institutions of the North are nothing but a distant memory in American society. While everyone north of the Mason Dixon line is stuck in a never ending groundhog's day, in which life is nothing more than the film "Dead Poet's Society" lived out day after excruciating day. To those of you that live above the Mason Dixon line, I will keep a seat warm for you. Sandblaster, Clemson and I have been working on a reverse underground "freedom" railroad for men and women of all colors and creeds. We will help you escape the barren waste land that you call home. #thesouthisrising #justlookupandyouwillseeus
Hey man the south is the best in the world. If we had more awesome waves we would be called south carofornia.
This time next week I will be lounging pool-side at the Ship's Watch Condos in North Topsail, NC. I am putting one of them turtle shell thingies on the roof of my pickup and loading it full of hair gel, spray-on tanner, and steroids. I'm going to Carpetbag the crap outta that place. "Step right up gents! For a limited time only adn for the low, low price of 5 dollars a bottle, you can get your hair, tan, and ab muscles to look exactly like Mike the Situations!" Fear not, this aint no window-less white van. Step into Captain Chavez's Jersey Shore Emporium and get that Jersey Shore look you've seen on TV!"
Any of youse CB/WB guys want to cruise up to North Topsail next week, be my guest. The waves are awful (for the most part) but I have the whole place to myself. Beers are on me. And I will be giving discounts on hair gel to all SI members as well. Just look for Ships Watch condos, head up to the beach out front and look for the only guy with a surfboard, a huge devil beard, tats, and a sasquatch-esque look about him yelling at his son to stop throwing sand and you have found me. Watch out for my wife though, she's one mean b!tch.
traaaafic, lack of urban development, total urban sprawl, bottle necks everywhere (so i'm talking tidewater area here), overt racism (and things such as kids waving 'round confed flags after school), waaayy too hot in the summer, waaay too ugly (and still cold, just not as cold in the winter), too much religion. that's a lot, but it was really the suburban housing development wonderland and 6 lanes of traffic everywhere with no urban center and unbearable heat & humidity that killed it for me. loved my two years in grad school though. i have traveled around the south a bit, and have enjoyed vacationing in raleigh, wilmington, savannah, New Orleans (pre & post katrina) amongst other places, just not somewhere i could ever find myself living long term, maybe, unfortunately due to my three years in tidewater....
By the time I hit the 495 outer loop on my way home, I am reassured of how glad I am I live further south. Yes, I know, I am from Maryland, which is "technically" the south, but they all act like Yankees up there anyway. The "True South" doesn't start until you get south of Richmond. Those Northern Virginians are just wolves in sheep's clothing. They ain't livin in the dirty dirty.
Tidewater Florida? All jokes aside, I have been a big fan of the south since I moved here.. But I must admit that I moved to a resort island, mostly inhabited by Yankees from the North East, who have retired and brought their money down with them. Most kids that "grew up" here don't have accents, because their parents, teachers and the general public don't either. I haven't seen a dixie flag in 2 years. Never heard a racist comment down here. So, I guess I am in a pocket of a somewhat sheltered community from the over-all poverty, racism and such that so many people speak of.... A few things did make me VERY uncomfortable since I moved here, but I have moved on and don't make a stink about it. 1) Every private, gated community (Which takes up 80% of the island) all have the term "PLANTATION" in their name. Port Royal Plantation. Hilton Head Plantation. Wexford Plantation. Shipyard Plantation etc. etc. Which to me just SCREAMS racial overtones... People around here say "These terms come from the local areas and have nothing to do with Slavery. Plantations have always been around, slavery or not".. There is even a small neighborhood called "Cotton Hope Plantation"... Really people? Really? I just picture it now, when a couple of my Black friends from Maryland are coming down to visit. I am on the phone walking them through the directions.... Yeah, when you see Hilton Head Plantation, make a left, then make a right at Cotton Hope Plantation... I would expect quite the uproar, like BRO? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I AINT DRIVING THROUGH NO DAMN COTTON PLANTATION! 2) Other major one, and a lot of this has to do with being one of the only people in the general area that wears a suit a lot. No lawyers do, no real estate agents do... Just me... So since I moved here, SOOO many people, most of which are way older than me, refer to me as SIR. And some of the older black people, that obviously have roots here use the term like second nature. Maybe it's somewhat racist of me to even think, they are calling me "sir" and holding the door for me because I'm white. It's not like that, but sometimes, you just have to second guess it, like the white guilt or something... Like, is this nice old mad calling me sir and catering to me as a complete stranger????? When my best friend from high school (Black) moved to the ATL area and went on to College in NC, he would come home and tell me horror stories about the south. About how all the older black men wouldn't look white people in the eyes, and how they would hold the doors and act very submissively towards well to do white people. He was always really pissed, like F that!!!! This was in the early 2000s, but still, I though he was exaggerating.... Again, I don't see a lot of it where I live, but even a little too much southern hospitality gets one thinking....
I really get annoyed by northern crackers that have confederate flags on their trucks. Flag worship in general annoys me.
