today seems to be their coming out party. hadn't seen one at all but passed 8 repto-pancakes
on the way to/home from beach. save them if you can (without getting smushed yourself) and
be aware while driving and perhaps increase your following distance. would love
to hear about any (safe) hi-way heroics...

Oh, the poor friggin' turtles. I moved a couple of box turtles out of my road last month. It's a dead end residential road but gets more traffic than I expected due to joyriding rednecks. Years ago I rescued another box turtle from an interstate in Maryland.

I've read that you should move them out of the road in the direction in which they were going, so that's what I do. I once found a large and very cranky snapping turtle on a country road. I got a snow brush out of the trunk and waved it in the turtle's face and that snapper charged the brush, snapping at the bristles, all the way out of the road and into the woods, where it stomped off with a mouthful of red bristles.

We get some monster snappers up here. Mean buggers.

Make sure to wash them hands after picking em up. Those things can get you sick in a hurry.

Who the hell picks up snappers? I'd be more worried about the jaws than the germs.

Just gotta be careful and mind that head. They come out a lot more than they look. Get up behind them.

i was told that if you see a big snapper, grab a stick and have them bite that. then drag it off the road. definitely do not touch

I saved one this past weekend. He had a bunch of pancake buddies all around him. The guy in the yard across the street didn't look too impressed. He was like.. "another turtle... happens all the time"

Didn't save any turtles this weekend, but I did save this little guy from the mower. Does that count?

Good for you. Of course we can't expect the average American to haul their wide load asses up out of their chairs to rescue a lowly reptile.
