There's fifty people out.......

seems to me, the smaller it is, the more people paddle out (unless it's unrideable). It's always annoyed the hell out of me when tourists/beginners crowd up the very best spots. Spongers are the worst, since they have fins and an extremely low center of gravity to get them into any wave...most of them don't know a close-out from a shoulder, anyhow.

I'm guessing most beginner surfers, and even some low intermediates, are afraid to surf alone; whether it be for fear of drowning or unknown sea life (as if anyone is really going to save them). They also want other people to see them do whatever they do...and to be able to brag about the premium spot at which they "surfed".

Then you have the high intermediate-experts who paddle out pretty much every day, no matter what size it is (depending on their equipment, of course)...but they want the best quality wave available. They pretty much just paddle around the beginners, anyway, but there's little avoiding drop-ins and bailed boards.

 

Zack seems like a cool dude but his stories do seem hard to believe sometimes. Sometimes I feel I can smell the BS.

 

So your a Maryland transplant and you tell people to go back to Arizona? Why is everyone who moves to SD suddenly a local after a few weeks?

I think it's all about quality of waves and how often you get them. I surfed a world class point break on my last Central America trip with 7 guys out. I was thinking this would have 200 at home. They get head high waves daily though and we don't get ****. So when waves do get good it's packed. After a week surfing twice a day I was content. Even there I never paddled right to the peak I waited for wide sets or sat inside and caught a ton if waves. I wasn't local there anyone not local should not go to the peak in my opinion pro surfer or kook

 

am I ok? do you mean mentally, or the sarcoma? i'm ok. I was just agreeing with Bill. there's no one out here until nice weather weekends and then summer with lifeguards and then little by little these kooks start showing up and I don't like it. so I escape to Hatteras for a bit, which is awesome. I have a tough time accepting the annual kook invasion, especially now that my legs are pretty crippled so I can barely stand up.

Newsflash: Nobody is a "local" in socal.... And when I slap disclaimers about how drunk I was all over a comment or thread, maybe yoose guys should take that into consideration before all of the "a guy from maryland is calling out tourists from Arizona.." well gents, I guess you just don't get it. No, being from Maryland does not make me some royal king out there. But I had similar feeling that day to all of you Jersey/East coast ranters about the "summer crowds" and "where were you all winter".... On the west coast, our chubby, buoys on softtops all hail from the state of Arizona.....

They are referred to as "Zonis", and as 99% of "locals" out there were not born and raised anywhere near their current residences, it is a common term used to anyone that is not of foreign decent who seek the west shores each summer.

And Bill, why are you on this anti-zach campaign. I have in no way accumulated your followers or something in your absence.

And for people I don't know, "questioning" the validity of any of my tales leaves me befuddled. Don't make me get my wife up in here and start regulating on you ney-sayers.

Anyway, it's all in good fun guys. In my years on this site, maybe "my" memories can sometimes be those told by an old fisherman, about his big catch, but generally speaking, if I have said it on this site, it is true. If I said I have done it, I have. If I said it was "this" big, generally, it was....

Other than that, if you can't believe that a guy got drunk, made a scene and tried to fight a tourist over a 1 foot wave..... If that is an unbelievable story, you have a pretty lame existence. Cause that's not even a cool story. Ohh, and the Volcom Story is very true. If you are one of the people, I actually know in real life, you have probably heard the story in real life and know certain peoples names...

Like I said, if you guys have never had too much to drink and said disrespectful things to complete strangers on the beach, you guys need to get out more....

If I started a thread about the life and times of Zach619 from age 20-25 or so and filled it with actual, true to life stories and encountered, you guys would probably not believe half of it, albeit completely truthful.

I am a boring, family man who gets stoked in chest high beach break.... But I once was not this man. I would have considered myself a pioneer at one point in my life. Many moons ago....

Believe it man. I mean, like I said, its a pretty lame story. Me, acting like a tool, trying to fight a guy over knee high surf because he said "WTF" when I took off. I know man, it's an unbelievable tale... I guess all the disclaimers about how lame I acted and how drunk I was, was not enough.

Here is a photo of my best friend, who claims that there is no such thing as a wave on the east coast. This was a photo in surfer magazine, probably 2007. The guy is a complete **** head, but he bring some serious heat in the water.... Gotta be good at something to make people hate you. He was great at surfing, and making people hate him. He was the better of all his Volcom "crew".

 

Right on man. Atta boy. What would Shaka Zulu do? Or anyone who actually surfs. Maybe too much SI time was leading your mind astray? A website full of story telling Wall St dudes and surfin' republicans can do that to you.

 

I still don't get this. Why does one have to be an out of touch, economically clueless, devoid of real education concerning the foundation of the country, progressive....to enjoy the water? (Not a republican for the record, I know, it drives liberals crazy, that's why I'm here)

I suppose he's "got it made" in the eye of the progressive living off of the hard working taxpayers. I say pursue what you want. Do whatever that makes you happy, but I'll be damned if I'm working 40+ hours a week so you can surf all day, drive a caddy, and eat lobster. Sure, we all want to do that, I'd be crazy to say otherwise, but this is the real world. I'm racking up 200K in college debt so I can put people under for surgery, going to pay out the ass for liability insurance, so this kid can eat lobster and chase swell. 5 days a week not including clinical. 200K. And he sits around doing nothing. I'm a year younger than him, and already have a finance degree, pursuing another 2 degrees.

Am I the only one here that has a problem with this? Is ambition an ugly word in progressive circles? In order for one to be a true surfer, must you speak as though you ate lead paint as a child?

This all reminds me of how I found SI in the first place. Dude's, SI spammed me. That's right, SPAM.
