Thank you sir, and I completely agree...that randomly showed up in my newsfeed this morning...funny how sometimes when you're wondering about something and the information just presents itself.

The fins are eaten by the middle to upper class...as are the other exotic animal products, so it's really a matter of want vs. need. The lower classes are suffering from benzine poisoning.

And ya know, as a History major, I've seen the critique that America developed w/out the regulations in place today, and that we can't expect other countries to not do the same. Bottom line is, a lot of things changed, including the body of scientific knowledge, no excuse.

And there are ways to minimize personal environmental impact, being American doesn't make you guilty.

On a brighter note, approximately 330 Chinese from Yunin, or wherever this festival is, have died from rabies since 2006 or something.

Fins, tiger dongs, etc. are eaten at weddings and other celebratory feasts as a way for the host to show off his generosity and wealth in a traditional way. Even in more progressive Chinese society (Shanghai, Taipei) faux versions of shark fin soup are still served at weddings. The hardest place to eradicate exotic animal products is in Chinese traditional medicine. They do absolutely nothing, but people still demand them because, hey, 5000 years of history can't be wrong.

I agree, but you are dreaming if you think that a government trying to shift 0.6 billion people from pre-industrial agrarian to a post-industrial space-age society is going to do much more than pay lip service to environmental concerns. Especially one as corrupt and frightened of their teeming masses as the chicoms.

No, but not doing them does make you "guilty". We all have the ability to reduce our consumption. Live in that 400sqft apartment. Exchange your car for a bicycle. Forego that flight to CR. Don't buy that new board.

Or don't. It's a free country; Live like you want, but--when you do--don't blame the Chinese for wrecking the planet when you do as much damage as any 5 of them.

I don't have a problem with anybody's lifestyle. I feel the need to point out the hypocrisy of somebody who eats 1/2lb hamburgers shipped from Brazil and drives their 9' log 60 miles a day in their F150 so they can grovel in knee-high surf, claiming that some Chinese dude who rides around on a bike hacking up pooches for lunch with a machete is the one killing the planet.

Who said they are killing the planet? All that was said is that it's an eff'd up thing to do and is not right.

What does mass killing threatened species or slaughtering peoples dogs have to do with eating a hamburger or driving an SUV? One has nothing to do with the other unless the SUV runs on whale shark blood or cows become endangered

Wrong. Yanker took us off track to the global environment, others piled on, and I quoted him in response to all.

No, pudpuller, you're the one who's been stridently & shrilly & steadily wrong. You've gone all DEFCON99 on us, pulling people's quotes out of context, ripping on people, making your inane comments that are, well, inane.

You're like a lab mutation of the gnome & chucka boo boo. gnoma boo boo....sounds like a newly created disease from China

I'm sure you're right, any every other source like this (world bank in this case) is wrong.

I've been watching this thread and I've gotta say Speed Bump comes off rational and balanced while the responses to him aren't winning anyone any points. The problem with both sides is that they're holding individuals responsible for the effects of their respective societies. The harsh reality is very few have any ability to make significant impact. So if you're going to demonize anyone, make it the handful of people who have real power (if such a group even exists).

China and Japan arent the only ones that are nuts about fining and whale killing. I believe Iceland, the Netherlands, Greenland, places of that nature have their very own whale slaughter. Its the human race in general that is sick and twisted. Think just cause we have brains, walk upright with opposable thumbs (better dextarity to create tools) that we are superior to all and can do as we wish upon what and who we wish with zero regard for our actions. Also generally because whatever religion we made up tells us there is gonna be an "end of days" that will save us from whatever hell-hole we've created here if we are good followers to said religion that tells us we are superior to non human inhabitants of this world as well.

Sorry for the rant, its been a long week and i havent surfed in a while. But tomorrow i'm off and i think theres gona still be a bit of swell.

In the 200+ years since the Industrial Revolution the U.S. has done more damage to the earth than all developing countries combined. We almost wiped out Buffalo, Wolves, Condors, giant tuna, sea turtles with the shrimping industry, shark hunting tournaments...Shiite, I still see trees getting knocked down for new strip malls ... My town looks nothing like it did in the Seventies. Now that these countries are coming up and going through the same process and the middle class explodes we're going to see tons more consumption of fuel, food, products, plastics, etc. You really don't want to be on this earth in another 200 years. Think the movie Road Warrior. When down in El Salvador, the local surfers just threw their plastic bottles in a big pile near the beach, along with other crap. Why? Because they are poor, and there isn't a big garbage truck that comes by once a week to pick it up. I was like wow, don't you care about the environment? No, they care about what they are eating tonight. I love the U.S.A. , wouldn't want to be anywhere else, but I understand what guys like Speed Bump are saying when he talks about hypocrisy. Don't point fingers when you buy that brand new stick, eat the sushi after your sesh, jump in to your12mpg truck, use imported goods from those foreign lands you hate so much, etc. Do the best you can and enjoy life while you're here.

So start a 'USA Has Got to Go' thread if you think it's so whack living in the USA. Hayzeus effing keerist, mang; this thread started as a point & shoot at China. Not as a comp in re: China vis a vis the USA. Stay on topic.

Some people posting here aren't reading the thread. The usual: in a hurry to flap their gums; listening isn't part of their game.

"Don't point fingers..." .... are you kiddn me? That's exactly what this thread is. And that's exactly what you did in your effort to, what, balance the anecdotal scale?

Yeah man pretty much what yankee just said. I guess I use this place like some people use facebook...I get a thought in my head and just throw it out there, I don't do that emotional sh!t on fb.

Yeah, the Industrial Rev. in the US straight raped the land. Forever changed the North American landscape. Thing is, we woke up. We've brought back many species, restored some semblance of balance in a few wilderness areas, etc, etc. Still and uphill battle, but at least some of our populace is trying.

As far as the finger pointing, allow me to expound on my statement aboot living in the US no making one guilty...I don't eat beef, I eat limited seafood(and keep it as local as I can), I don't buy frivolous plastic sh!t, and limit how many of my dorrars go to China, I plant native species, I don't use pesticides, I recycle my electronics, haven't used a plastic water bottle in years, and in general I don't use single serving/disposable products. Clean the beach/trail every time I'm out. And I get 21 mpgs, be glad I drive to surf, otherwise you'd have a green Don Quixote on your hands...but don't tell me about my sushi and f**king 12 mpg, when I god damn do every thing I can possibly think of to minimize my own personal impact.

Mr. Leety, you're right about dem Scandanavian countries...think in Denmark they have an especially brutal annual whale hunt. And you're spot on about the human race in general imo.

Next time some Euro queer gets all high and mighty about Europe being better than the US, remind them of this, as well as their long record of imperialism...yeah, I know we both do shady sh!t but they straight up had colonies until the late 50's.

All that being said, this was started as an opinionated thread, and I never claimed to hold the final say in the matter. And of course, all the points others have mentioned I've thought of before coming to my conclusion, which remains the same...LET'S DROP DEM TICKS BOYS:cool:

I'm all in favor of tick bombing 'em, but Lyme disease isn't usually fatal, so it doesn't seem like ticks would be the most effective WMD. But I suppose if we killed them all there'd be nobody left to buy our T bonds.
