...right? http://www.shopsurfysurfy.com/surfboards/110-used-skip-frye/ laws of supply and demand have equalized and this stick is not as bad as roys but close to it. I appreciate the trash pickup and all, but has anyone ridden a Frye and why are they so $$?
I would prefere to take the $3,000.00, buy 2 or 3 BRAND NEW boards and still have some loot left over. Not sure why so expensive. Collectors board?
Skip Frye... dunno. apparently hes the ish. Josh Hall makes similar boards and charges half but is still pricey.
Never ridden a SKip Frye. But he is probably the biggest legend in all of southern california. Every board he ever touched turned to gold. He is by far the most respected guy in San Diego County. Dude probably hasn't paid for a dinner in 30 years in that town. He wife is cool as sh** too. Donna is always out surfing in OB. She actually got elected to be Major when I lived there, but Jerry Sanders won on a technicality because of some error in the write ins... Anyway, that board is worth every bit of $3,000. Not sure why, but that is a piece of surfing history. Skip Frye is a bigger deal to some than Kelly Slater is. Just like Gerry Lopez. I am sure some of his original boards would seel for around $10,000 easy. Some people transcend the sport, and Skip is one of those dudes. There have only been a few in the history of surfing, and Skip Frye is one of them.
I know hes a big deal... I guess i am seeing this as more of an art piece than a functional board... 11 ft wtf? and surfysurfy needs to stop with the $$ handplanes too.. .truedat
Kink of like how a painting is just oil, pigment and canvas...I'm positive more than a few of them have gone for many times what R's (don't want to set off his google alerts) boards go for. I have a relative that sells paintings in the 5-9k range. If I was leaking money out of my pockets and going to spend that much on something to hang on the wall it'd be a 2 or 3 classic LBs. To each his own. There are plenty of loaded baby boomers with coin to spend. Someone's just trying to take it from them before the next guy does.
I've owned a couple of his keel fish shapes in the 70's and 80's. His shapes are the real deal, he is one of the top shapers ever (Lis, Brewer, Noll, etc.) His boards are definitely collector's items, and will only continue to rise in value. A very good investment. I personally wouldn't pay $3000 for any board, but only because I'm poor. If I had money to burn, I'd do it every day and twice on Sunday. SurfySurfy is HypeyHypey. They overhype everything that is their current Flavor of the Month.
That's a lot of board, with a lot of history. And, sad to say, sooner or later there aren't going to be any more new Fryes out there.
Yeah, I would buy that as a wall hanger for sure, and take it out on special occasions. I.E. once my daughter can surf, let her take the Skip Frye out for a spin. I would be honored to have one in my home. I would NEVER just let it collect dust forever. That would be a terrible thing to do.
