alternative boards, anything but surfing on a HPSB for me is more fun and more entertaining to watch. The best pros surfing on their shortboards is dynamic and radical but it all looks the same. Longboards, fun boards, fish's etc. are more fun to watch and surf...check out Tyler on a mini simmons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZOBzF4FPvo
Hes top notch. Bought a print from him too. great artist. Tom curren has been enjoying some alt shapes lately too...http://store.mollusksurfshop.com/collections/surfboards/products/5-5-tyler-warren-tc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1EDiBHWyjA
Curren....this guys surfing is timeless! Just watch his surfing on the first mini Simmons/egg shape. He seriously could jump on tour and smoke some ASP egos. Just love this guys flow...ridiculous rhythm. Long live Curren
I tend to agree. I find longboarding, surfing on coffee tables, etc., as well as big wave riding, much more entertaining to watch. Also anything at the Wedge.
TOOOO SLOWWWWWWW..... Very cool video. The guy is ripping. Disclaimer: It is a shoulder to head high day at Trestles. For anyone who hasn't surfed lowers, you can surf that place on a good day on a door, coffee table, soft top, Alaia or pretty much anything that floats. So, while that is a great mini simmons video, there is not a wave on this entire coast that would setup and allow for that kind of timing, smooth transitioning and just general shreddability. He is working way harder than it looks to do all those turns and tricks. Watch how flexible he is, and how much he bends his body, knees, legs, rail grabs and stuff.... Definitely an interesting video, but you could ride any board at lowers and it will feel easy. I wouldn't say trestles is the "best" wave I have ever surfed, but that place is the easiest place to rip that I have ever been too. People always call it a skate park, because regardless of how you surf (barrels excluded), you can just rape that place. Speed that video up a bit though. Dang.
ive seen some of his surfing before.....actually before I got my minisimmons and was definitely super inspired by it. insane style. those boards are so fun too. on the right day when it lines up off a jetty, they are so fun to ride.
you know where Slater learned how to surf like a champ? Tom Curren! How old is this friggen guy? 50? Unbelievable...Still shredding like a kid, but, a kid could never be so silky smooth.
Really want to try the mini simmons. I ride fishy type boards for the glide and need to save for a Mini. And yes,,,, it's lowers people... http://vimeo.com/8941685
Haha, I hear you. If you had a place even half as good as that, I would keep it a secret too... But this day in age, I would have to challenge that statement, since every breaking wave from Miami to Nova Scotia has already been identified. But hey, if you got it, keep it. Secret.
Fair enough. Then I will assume that you are just showing east coast bias and that there isn't a wave as rippable as trestles anywhere on the eastern seaboard =) Call the ASP and see if they will trade the Terstles tour stop and move it east.
or since you live on the east coast now you can give up the west coast bias. Have you surfed the whole east coast to make that claim. i've surfed good trestles a bunch and can compare it to waves i surfed here. plus the wave that curren is surfing in that vid is mexico. it was a surfers journal story.
Didn't look at the curren video. I was just speaking on trestles. No, I have not surfed the entire east coast, but I see every video and photo for the most part that makes it through the media on a good swell, I have never, ever, ever, ever seen a video of a wave on the east coast that even remotely resembles Trestles. And I would like to think I don't have west coast bias anymore. I am just saying, there has been an ASP tour stop there for years for a reason. Kelly Slater says that his favorite wave in the world is lower trestles. There are thousands of videos of trestles just going bonkers and guys just shredding it apart. I have surfed it many times, and like I said, its not the biggest or best wave I have ever surf, but the most "RIPPABLE".... If Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater and John John all say that trestles is the most rippable wave on earth, I will not only believe it, but agree with them..... Not saying there are not world class waves on the east coast. I am saying that there is no where else on the PLANET like trestles. And guys who get paid to surf and have surfed every good wave on the planet wouldn't argue with that.... Just saying, if you think anywhere on the eastern side of the US breaks like that, and allows sections to hold up like that, I would love to see it. I really would. But my argument is that it simply doesn't exist. Not being a hater. Maybe I should have phrased it differently. But I could never see me having a mini simmons in my quiver and thinking it was a good idea to take it out at the washout, or anywhere in MD or anywhere I have lived and spent a lot of time. Not that you can't get good waves on a board like that, I am just saying you won't have the opportunity to swing it around and rip it on such a playful wave. Trestles never dies out on the inside, it just keeps going, and going and going until that final little ankle high section snaps over the rocks on the inside.... Its just a freakish wave and I have never seen one like it, on video or in real life... Not the best wave in the world, but it is the best wave of its kind for sure.
