switched from bb to surfing last june.. ive been getting better and just bought a shorter board yesterday. im getting pretty good on rights but i cant quite get the hang of lefts any tips?
i feel ya man im a beast on the rights but just cant do any backhand cutbacks or floaters on the lefts.
i'm a regular foot and i find it easier to get barreled going left for some reason also, i guess, its easier for me to stall going left
for left bashes its all about the bottom turn, the setup is more important than the actual slash. a really vertical hooked bottom turn is gonna lead to a vertical bash. And as for left barrels, drop in deeper than you think you should, still try to stall as much as possible, and once your in there run it out like hell. you'll find that you can get deeper barrels backside, cause your pigdoging. For all of my best left barrels, i didnt think was any way i would make the drop and make the barrel, but trust me, you will surprise yourself.
Goofy.. i am goofy and find it easier on big days when its throwing to go right, and make it. something about grabbing the rail and going right is easier to get barrled and stay with the wave
Sensitivity Going left when you're a regular footed surfer is largely about wave sensitivity, being more aware of your surroundings and being able to sense what's coming next. What makes it seem harder is your restricted field of vision, but when you really think about it, even when you go right you're not looking at the wave right beside you, but rather out in front of you. If you take that approach on the lefts, you'll begin to gain confidence. Look for what's coming next, not what's happening now and then project yourself down the line to the next section. The fun part of going backside is the extra torque you can apply to bottom turns. And then of course the rebound utilizing your knee bend to absorb the pressure of your cutback. All this. . . and of course practice- over and over and over. Just don't avoid going backside and you're bound to get better at it.
For the small waves we get (all this barrel talk gives me a chuckle) the key is shoulders. you want to keep your shoulders perpendicular to the wave, not parallel. also, watch your right arm. if that gets behind you it pulls your weight back and slows you down.
It sounds weird but pay attention to the way you drop in backside. Like some one said before me it has a lot to do with vision and where you are on the wave. Setting yourself up from the drop can help a lot. Experiment with your angles and find a comfort zone where you consistently make the drop, and make the shoulder of the wave. From there you can develop your approach as you get better at making bottom turns and learn how to pump for speed on your backhand. Like any sport work on your weakest skills the most and seek out lefts despite the fact that your session might not be as fun, because it will be ultimately be more productive.
I'd throw out the bottom turn altogether and drop and an angle. creates more speed that way initially then if you want to do a big hack, you can bottom turn with much more speed.
move to Long Island? Seriously, backside you aim with your right foot, frontside, aim with your right arm
All this advice!!! What's a guy to do?? I just go left when the waves dictates it and right when it looks good that way. The only advice that's going to do you any good is this: PRACTICE GOING BOTH WAYS!! unless we're talking about sex then you might want to just keep it straight, unless of coarse going backside is your thing.
I'm goofy, but I find going right (backside) fun because I guess it feels more intense. I don't have a problem with going backside, I just go whichever way looks better. Btw, I'm a barrel virgin.
hahahahahahaha this kids a barrel virgin i guess we should teach him how to rdie a good barrel. and besides if you dont know how to get barreled then sucks for you its easy. i got barreled when i was learning how to surf. and u know im just messing with you man.
