I heard that today on the radio. I guess "under God" was added to the Pledge in the '50s or so.

 

True. This is from Jefferson himself: "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State."

Doesn't get much clearer than that!

Yup and yup, I was referring to the "new country." When was the last election where a presidents religious affiliation wasn't brought up in order to sway votes?
