yeah for sure, a lot of people feel the compulsion to go out and buy something they feel they need but is really just a want. I've gotten better at weighing out those things and strictly trying to just stay with the needs. I'm proud of myself I haven't been in a best buy in over a year lmao. Don't need that material crap to fill some void. Surfing and the stoke give it to me, negating the travel costs it's something free to do and there's no better feeling. I can't wait to get out of work and get in the water
It's the same in the North. Countless expeditions, escalades, Hummers etc all rolling the highway on ridiculous commutes with a driver and no passengers. I'm not rocking a hybrid, but I keep our daily drivers at the 30MPG mark. Until/unless Gas prices double or more, I don't see a change in habits here. That would require the government to drop subsidies, and I can't see that happening. Ford and GM have deep pockets, and f150s, Suburbans and the like are huge sellers and carry huge profits. Does anyone else find it incredibly ridiculous when you look at the "flex fuel" plaque on the back of a Suburban, or Yukon as it's filling up at the tank? I mean really, that whole ethanol corn fuel crap is a zero sum game at teh cost of billions in subsidies. Norway doesn't subsidize fuel prices, and it's around $10 at the pump. They instead use that money to provide free college education. I got three kids, I'll bike my fat a$$ to work if they want to put them through school for me. Man, I have to go find a thread actually about surfing. Thinking about this stuff is making me angry.
Or you could go out and actually surf? Nothing too special out there today but it's knee-waist and clean right now. I can't wait to get out of work and head into the water with the fishcuit lol
And guess what? WE are all the enemy now. Even after I got arrested and incarcerated I used to laugh at all the "we are a Police state" "black helicopter" people. But the more I look around, the more I see this sh!t happening. The complete disregard for the land- the shale drilling in PA, the f@cked up Monsanato stuff. The complete disregard for the water- BP, Exxon, all this drilling. The complete De-valuing of the dollar. The complete shredding (no pun intended) of our basic rights. (Cops smashing down doors, throwing tear gas canisters into a crib- google it). Shoot first ask questions later cop mentality that exists now. I just read about how the army is selling off surplus armored vehicles to police forces in the U.S.A. One town with a pop. of bout 3000 bought one. Why does a small town need an armored vehicle and it's own SWAT team? Sorry to go off the drilling topic but it's all starting to tie together. Sh!t aint right.
Word Chavez, well said. And I saw that story you referenced, SWAT threw a flash bang in a crib and burned the sh!t out of a baby.
couldn't have said better. We are slowly slipping down a dangerous slope. I wouldn't be surprised if are country is in a full blown police state in the next 10 or 20 years. I mean, we already got mass surveillance and the police force is slowly turning into a death squad. George Orwell might have guessed early but he guessed right.
+1...just saw one about another cop induced dog death. Cop pulls car over, dog gets scared and runs out, cop doesn't let owner get dog, dog dies.
Not sure about the Zeitgeist movie thing but I DO know what I have experienced within my life or in my 'sphere'. I have seen streams in Northern PA once teaming with trout now void of fish. Fracking fluid/water ponds leaked into the stream. You don't hear about that on MSNBC or Fox News. We all have seen the massive damage of the gulf spill. Not on the nightly news but by images and video posted online by the ordinary people whose lives depend on the gulf to provide for them and those that used it for leisure. I have seen dolphins wash up dead for unknown reasons. I learned that an old acquaintance of mine's nephew was MURDERED on the front stoop of his friend's house by a SWAT team in Wilmington DE. He was an Iraqi war vet. No prior arrest record. Just a patch on his vest that labeled him and enemy to the police. They hit him with so many taser blasts that he was in convulsions and vomiting on the ground. While laying there in his vomit, they shot him in the chest for "resisting arrest." (Google Derrick Hale Wilmington De.)
A'ight, Zombie, you can flip those oil rigs the bird. If we were all living like you, BP wouldn't have the fiscal motivation to drill out there. Not being sarcastic here. I'm the Al Gore of this thread, though, because I probably consume more oil than any 3 of you put together, simply by virtue of all the travel. Sure I shop at thrift stores, ride my bike, etc. when I'm in country, and take public transport and live small when I'm overseas, but air travel is a planet-killer. I'd love to see gas go up 10 bucks a gallon, carbon credits to force polluters to pay for the damage they do to common resources, and a grid that was 100% wind, solar, nuke. I don't think prohibiting oil rigs off the EC or a pipeline in Montana gets us any closer to actually solving the energy problems. In fact, being able to NIMBY away enviro disasters to China, the Middle East, or Alaska, just allows us to go on consuming. Better to stick the impacts from their behavior right in people's faces. I think it makes it harder for coal-rolling jerzee boys to justify their guzzlers, when THEIR shore is coated in oil from a spill. It's tougher for Malibu scumsuckers to heat their 8000 sqft mansion when a giant offshore LNG terminal gets stuck right in the middle of their precious ocean view. So drill, baby, drill, right in the back yards of the oil execs and, failing that, frack the **** out of Joe Blow's neighborhood, so he can directly see the cost of cranking up the A/C.
Thanks Seen, happened about 6 years ago but it's still burned in my mind and has been repeated over and over and over again to citizens and dogs.
I'm sure something like that will stay with you for a while...the way I see it, I bet the guys with those patches would do a better job of maintaining order than the powers that be. The govt. does way more shady and violent sh!t than various organizations that exist.
