Is it wrong that I'm already thinking about what my next short board will be? I "need" one in the 5'10-6' range, a true HPSB for GOOD waves.

well, except when they did. the 80's decade. you might be too young to understand the context but they
didn't leave on their volition but were chased out of town. happily. by folks JUST LIKE US.

the other thing is i'm being vilified for attacking longboards when i did no such thing. i simply posited that
technology will continue to advance to the point where the 2 1/2 ft more of board is superfluous . just something extra we don't need and it will wither and die on the vine. the actual longboard will still be
    around in museums.

I think the anti-longboard thing started in the mid-70s. Ironically enough, about the same time the anti-disco movement started. You are right about them being run out of town too. I recall one of the first times i ever hit the surf beach in OCMD around 82. Some guy showed up with a log and there was a full on mob scene.

I was not around when LBs were "chased out of town", and I'm not disagreeing with you. But times have changed. Social media and the internet and the fact that the surf industry is much bigger then it was back then. Even with the advancements in surf craft, guys will still be hanging 10 and posting pictures/videos on the internet, people will see it and be intrigued and still want to LB. No one is chasing anyone out of town these days.

And I'll say it one last time, just because you have a small wave SB dosn't mean you have no need for a LB. Some might not need a LB but anyone who enjoys the completely diffrent feeling of riding a LB will still have plenty of use for them. All the dudes who try so hard to be just like there favorite pro don't need LBs. Anyone with a open mind who likes to try diffrent things just to get a diffrent feeling will always have a use for a LB or HPSB or fish or quad or thruster or grovler or egg or bonzer or hand plane or mat or alaia or bodyboard or skimboard or sup. Anything. Point being nothing is going any where. Maybe less popular, but never obsolete. Now I'm bowing out of this ridiculous thread.

My only beef with LBs is that they make it way too easy for people to get into the sport. In the 'old days' people tried surfing on shortboards and most gave up cause it was much hard then learning on a log. The people who toughed it out showed great dedication and were always welcome on the line ups.

this. but i sound like a dinosaur today when i carp about it, don't i? (anybody but clemmie can answer)…it was
so different - as bassmon correctly points out - back then…and you're right to tie in anti-disco as it fit
and i suffered from it (i think)…that headset bled over into other things. i seem to think that in the 80's
our tribe was a surfshop and today it is a wal-mart.

Pump how ya been! Dude, look I know you're all nostalgic and stuff, but when exactly were the good ole days? Go back and watch Endless Summer and see Wingnut and Robert August killing it on LB's, was that not the good ole days? I'm not being a jerk here, just trying to understand just how OLD you are? Were the good ole days after the Endless Summer? If so, wouldn't that mean the LB came first? Just trying to understand dude. I surf em all, so none of it offends me.

When its tiny I take my old mans LB out and get some waves. When its flat I take out the Stand-Up and get some exercise. When its small I take out the fish. When its good I take out the SB. Sometimes I just go swimming. Sometimes I free dive. Sometimes I go out on boats. Sometimes very late at night I go swimming in my birthday suit with my lady. But only on those 'lets have a couple of margs nights'.

Get it, enjoy it, and share it whenever you can.

My final statement, following Mr. BassMon is that, IMO, Long Boards are heading back to an upswing. 10 years ago, the shortboard craze was in full effect and everyone, including me had 19 shortboards, 10 of which were identical and had a very closed mind. Longboards are being "rediscovered" by even the most avid shortboard enthusiasts, because they made surfing fun, in every way.

People are over the potato chip, WQS tour boards. We all need a couple of them, but Long Boards are probably the most functional wave riding vehicles out there. That isn't changing. And in recent years, even in CA, I saw all the little local rippers start showing up on single fin planks when the conditions call for it, because they are the right thing to be riding on a lot of days. Big and Small. Unless you are in a heat at trestles with a jersey on, grab whatever stick tickles your fancy and surf already....

I don't know where to pull these numbers from, but I bet you compared to 10 years ago, proportionally measured with an increase in surfers, Long Board sales and requests to shapers are probably at an all time high for this millennium.....

I will admit, they are MUCH easier to surf... But anyone that is comfortable and confident in their SB skill level, should have the security and confidence to go out on a LB and shred for fun. And yeah, when you are surfing a SB 95% of the time, Long Boards make it feel like cheating. But you aren't going to get that "King of the ocean" feeling that you get while you are noseriding, standing tall with your chest out. You will NEVER, EVER get that same feeling riding any kind of small wave SB or hybrid. I don't care how thick it is, or if it is shaped like a bedroom door. You AINT going to get that feeling, and if you are okay with that, then cool, but you are missing out....

    I'm out.

My GOD (that's Good Old Days so dont freak Yankee) were early to mid-80s. Whole different world then. Strict line up rules and had to learn on shorties. Like Mr Trailerpark said, it was way more tight knit then.

the answer to what you seek lies in the question i have previously posed today?

what is this?? (bet chich knows cause it used up time til hogans heroes' comes on)

    he was hanging five
    and walking the nose.
    when the meet was over
    the trophy was joes'.

therein lies the peak we seek.

    you can say that again.

    this part concerns me.

there is, however, some truth to the picture you paint w/such broad strokes.

Soooo neither of you have a valid come back, nice. Dudes, LB's came first, just because when YOU started surfing it was the SB craze, doesn't mean it's the good OLE days. No, if LB's came first, then they came first, period. You can't change history just because you decided to pick up surfing in the 80's. Don't forget the roots of surfing. The surfing world didn't begin in the 80's when you picked it up, it was well established long before you or I ever picked up a board, of any length or shape. Say what you want about Wingnut but the dude murders it out there. I'd like to see you challenge the guy to a surf off, or bench off, whatever tickles your testes.
