Amen. Also have to realize that its always evolving, and when it does, some of what gets left behind doesn't translate to what pushes forwards. A Ferrari just wont give you the feeling a Shelby Cobra will. Here's the Bull catching the 3rd reef feeling for the first time in the history of the 3rd reef. Listen to this guy...olo, alaia, paipo, pecker as fin, they were all there in the beginning. You guys are fantastic though. Love that Bull 3rd reef footage.
I did own a number of longboards for years. From 60s style block fin logs to HP logs. just never really liked the glide. Must be my ADD but I gotta be moving on the wave and generating my own speed.
That's cool, to it's their own right? My only point is to not knock the LB because it's origin is the foundation of surfing IMO. I started on a HPSB, only had that one board for years, then my 2nd board was also a shorter board, so my mind was closed at one point and as I've said in other threads, it hindered my growth. Now I surf a SB much better these days as a result of getting a LB and increasing my wave count. You might want to take another look at a LB and try pumping and generating speed, it can be done!
I used to think SUP was just the worst. Then I got some waves with Dave Kalama and found out its not.
Right on dude, you're probably stoked on them, and that is good! Not trying to convert you to a LB'er, just opening up the discussion to maybe open a few minds out there. My goal is to have one of each type of board there is, without too much overlap. Right now I've got a 6'4" Coil Flashback Fish, 6'10" WRV FunFish (both shaped by Mike Daniel), a 8'1" McTavish 8 Ball (mini LB), and I'll have a 9' Performance LB / Nose-rider next weekend added to my quiver. Next up is a 5'11" - 6' rounded tail HPSB (Coil of course) for quality surf, and then after that i'm going to probably look at getting a 5'6" - 5'8" Coil Megamind. I think at that point, i'll have all my bases covered.
Don't give a crap about what somebody rides as long as they observe etiquette. Problem is the most newbies who cause issues ride SUPs or LBs which is why is easy (and mentally lazy) to bash those boards. Def guilty of that.
I can see where you're coming from. I find myself having a negative outlook toward some SUP'ers and LB's myself, but as you stated, I watch their lineup etiquette and that is usually what makes me feel that way, not the board itself. It's human nature to start stereo typing or having a prejudices based on a several negative experiences. I have been guilty myself, so we aren't too different there.
Yeah I think it's an addiction, but i'm ok with that. My wife however, not so much, but she's been really cool, she bought my last couple, this new LB is totally on my own but she hasn't b*tched about it, she understands. I think the key is to wait a year or two between new boards and then there's really no fuss.
Bro you must take care of your sticks unbelievably well then. It's all in the transport. Gotta use bags. I rarely do so it adds up. More than anything a big quiver is a storage issue. Gotta figure out a cool racking system here at the crib. Things are out of hand, and that's not counting the skates.
Most of my boards have held up really well, lots of mileage, some ding repairs along the way, but nothing too major. I store them in my 2nd bedroom that doesn't get used for much. Definitely a storage issue though, that's my wife's only concern. When we get our house on the E. Coast I'm going to build a rack system or buy one that keeps them organized and safe from damage. When I travel I roof rack the longer boards but the SB's go inside the Vehicle. I'm going to get a board bag for the new LB, I want to keep her in pristine condition as long as possible.
Thanks, I'll check em out! I found a couple Dakine bags for $94-$99 at The Surfboard Warehouse, which is right up the road from me, but I'll see what these dudes got too
