More college talk..help

Salisbury University... 30-40 minutes to Ocean City, MD beaches.

 

what do people think of coastal carolina? good? bad? academically speaking...and waves

plenty of schools in NJ that are within 2 hours of monmouth and ocean counties. rutgers, seton hall, and montclair are right up the parkway (~1 hour) from manasquan and the surrounding area. tcnj is in trenton, just a quick shot east on I-195 to the shore. of course there's also princeton...

coastal carolina is a crappy school and myrtle isn't the best for waves. if you're looking at carolina surf then your best bet would be UNC-Wilmington which is close to carolina beach and only about an hour drive to the south-facing beaches of emerald isle.

 

better keep the grades up if you are looking at unc-wilmington. for an out of state student it is very competitive. apply to university of hawaii manoa if your looking for some true surf... take it from me

 

Monmouth University... 30 minutes from every beach in Monmouth county. Decent programs depending what you're looking to go into. Pretty good comp sci. Got marine bio...

Just about all schools in NJ are within two hours of the beach. Rowan(South Jersey), Rutgers, TCNJ/Rider both near Trenton (TCNJ is a hard school to get into, Rider not so much)

. . . Glassboro State, NJ. I hear they have a good reputation. Or, in Delaware, Del State in Dover, or Wilmington College and Del Tech in Georgetown.

 

odu is near vb and the eastern shore. Not the greatest places to surf but the schools coming along; they're getting a football team for next year which is when i'd be a freshman. Thats my backup school.

 

im thinkin about goin to Salisbury after i graduate this year, would like to take a class that has to do with the ocean, like marine biology or somthin, anybody know of a carrer that has to do with the ocean?

 

if I may,...this is a little off topic,...but.

I want to give some sincere advice to those in college and those getting ready to attend one.

What ever you do, never give any professor a reason to poop on you.

There are far to many people with advanced degrees that know next to nothing about some of the most simplest things. They may call it liberal arts, but what that means is that you have no rights what so ever, to speak your mind or to have a hint of any type of views (conservatives should never speak your mind) other then the ones They think are the correct ones. Many will lie and go so far as to try and ruin your future if they can. Just like life, there are pieces of trash everywhere, and many have a PH. D. before their name. Never allow yourself to fall for the idea that they know something or even more then you. But never let them know that. Do all your work, on time and never argue any point. Always document everything, by email or notes to yourself sent to yourself through email.

Many teaching have never had any real life experience in their fields, and many times the reason they are teaching is that they could not handle the real world of work.

Yes there are many GREAT and Wonderful Professors, and many times you will see their classes over run by students who want to attend them. But trust me, never put yourself in any position where you are at odds with any of them.

Outside of pulling a Black OP on them, you options will be very limited.

It makes no sense really,... at the college level we have always been told that opposing views are what drives research and study in all fields, however, many times the opposite is true. There is nothing worst then some worthless *uck that has really never done anything other then gaining tenure......they truely are a nightmare.
Always ask around first before you sign up for your classes, it will help you. Remember, once they get tenure they are accountable next to no one.

Thank you for allowing me to vent off topic...and by the way, not that I know much, I am approaching a PH d,....credit count wise. so I have seen the good and the bad, and so far it seems as though the bad is real bad when you see it. best of luck, and yes in the end it is worth it.

don't know why i didn't mention this in my earlier post, but i lived with 3 kids in raleigh who were all east carolina graduates... ECU is in greenville, nc and only about 1.5 hours to a lot of breaks on the outer banks.

realistically though, you should be going to university to pursue a professional career in something you would enjoy... not to surf. that's just wasting your time and money. if you can do both, then great. personally i ditched surfing for 4-5 years to get a good engineering degree from an inland school... i think your future career should be a higher priority than riding waves

 

Salisbury is a good academic school, also a good party school. Got quite a few friends that go there.

UNC Wilmington has a VERY nice campus. I visited there last year, and is highly ranked

 

for undergrad, check out ramapo college. its actually a pretty good school, right up there around tcnj. its in north jersey but it only takes a little over an hour to get to monmouth.
or you could just go to monmouth u which is right in long branch... they have some ocean-y, marine-bio classes i believe.

No offense..but if you ditched surfing for 4-5 years then you're completely nuts. And who is to say that your future career should be a higher priority than riding waves? We can probably all agree that it is the 'smarter' choice... but what if the kid wants to get a degree and still surf?

Why are you here living... to follow the 'American Dream' and get that 'big degree' and 'high paying job'? I just think you should do what the **** you want regardless if it not the best choice. You are alive, a person, to live, so go do what you want... surf for the rest of your life...

Stockton

Stockton is right by A.C.

 

I agree... just graduated there in May. Stockton is a good school, but doesn't compare to Rutgers and **** like that.

Stockton is 15 minutes from AC, 30 from LBI or OC. It's one of the cheapest and by 2010, they will have mega-renovations done and will be really nice.

 

Salisbury

Salisbury is a great school and has a core group of surfers. About to graduate here myself and have loved this school since day one.

As for what xgen had to say, i agree to an extent. Many professors have degrees in fields which they have never used. Meaning that they never actually have been in the real world, holding a job that puts their degree to use. Some go straight from college to get the masters, then on to the docterate without any actual expierience. Oh and you can tell the difference for sure.
