http://www.surfingmagazine.com/news...oastal-edge-east-coast-surfing-championships/ So no waves in the near future then. The beach from 22 to 70 street. Luckily the fecal force field will protect the contestants. http://wavy.com/2014/08/13/swimming-advisory-issued-for-part-of-the-oceanfront/
Won't make a diff. Despite tainted water and high parking fees, there will still be a big turnout. Probably most of the kids showing up won't even know there's surfing going on, if the vid that was posted here from the recent Huntington Beach contest is any indication. I know a bit about the history of the ECSC, but it still amazes me that the event continues to be held here despite the summer surf conditions and the City now sucking so much money out of organizations wanting to hold events here.
Today's article in Virginian-Pilot/Pilot Online on one of the founders of the ECSC, Butch Maloney. Pictured with Wave Jet equipped Walden. http://hamptonroads.com/2014/08/death-came-knocking-legend-rode-it-out I recall a similar article last year. He's 70 now. IMO, he had some health issues which might've killed him if he hadn't surfed. Liked his observation: "Too many people are on the gerbil wheel, being so busy trying to be busy..." VB surf forecast still not looking favorable for this week.
It's odd for summer conditions but more times than not the wave gods sprinkle the ecsc with a decent un/under predicted swell. DosXX, you hit the nail on the head here. They want the Jaycees to pony up an extra $40k but there is no extra 40k when they only make 35-40,00 on their portion of the contest. If the city um...leaders... get their way the Neptune Festival group (basically a VB gov't committee) will have the only events at the oceanfront after they've priced everyone out of the place. Those folks get paid real well too. They had to form a Non-Profit because they were making too much $$. Now they just give themselves big salaries.
