For pet owners. Find an emergency 24 hour vet and keep the # close. Sunday morn my daughter's Pit/Wiemerranner jumped thru a window and cut the schitt out of his legs. She was on the road when she called me for help. I looked on line and found a vet. I called the emergency # and got an operator who wasn't affiliated with that vet but was an emergency phone #. After 14 hours and $900 later he was home.
same thing happened to my Dalmation a few years ago. Thing sliced an artery and took off running in house. Here's another tip, contact your local police department and inform them that if they need to come on your property for any reason they are to contact your immediately and NOT to shoot your dog.
Yeah man, happens all the time believe it or not. Witnessed it first hand. A pit and a smalled lab mix were notorious for jumping against the window and barking everytime we would walk by this certain condo in SD. They would keep slamming against it when they would see our dog. Very common walking path, so these dogs must have seen other dogs at least every 5 minutes all day, throwing themselves at the glass each time. I always thought, one day man, one day. So that day came. Glass shatters, I see the screen popping out with a paw through it, then I watch the genius pitbull just disregard the glass and climb out butting up his paws and stomach. I scooted the wife, new born baby and our Black Lab back to the house as quick as we could, got in the truck and doubled back. I got both of them in the truck within about 30 minutes. One stayed in the neighborhood, one got out on the street. Left a note on their door. Returned them about 3 hours later when the people got home from work. Not anything major, wife was a vet-tech. Just a bunch of blood and glass. I just told the people, that the dogs may act properly when they are around, but everytime I walk by your unit and there are no humans in the house, these dogs go ape sh**. I don't know what the answer is, but you know the kind of dogs, that just slam up against those windows, and up against front doors with glass panes. It's only a matter of time before those dogs get through one time. Then they will end up mangled, dead, or end up hurting someone else... If my dog acted like that, I would at least gate up the first floor window or glass while I was away, so the psycho didn't kill himself or someone else.
we bought metal grating and put it on the inside of the glass. seems to work well but just looks crappy.
Yeah, like I said, I don't have a perfect solution to offer. It is especially troubling in those large scale condo and apartment homes with hundreds of units, and very poorly made glass etc. It's an accident waiting to happen. We have one problem dog in our new neighborhood that exhibits these behaviors, but the front door glass is double pane and like hurricane solid, so I am pretty sure ol' poochie won't small through, but he really throws his weight into it.... When I lived in big condo units or apartment communities, I would always go for the second floor, so the pets wouldn't have a change to do anything like that, and plus, I hate the non-privacy factor of people walking their dogs and just peeping in your windows. My dog may have been strong enough to bust some glass back in the day, but home boy would NOT have taken a leap out of the second story window.
