I'm surprised Laird was at Malizoo and not **tt** **m*. I used to see him SUP'ing his LB in the early aughts back before SUP was a thing. I guess he figured the larger surf would thin the herd. *** **m* was epic that day. A lot punchier than Malibu, with no pier to get in the way. Pier shooting is pure novelty. The piers almost always knock down the wave until it's just a mushburger. It is a little intense, seeing a set of concrete pylons rushing at your head, though.
Ever see a guy hit the piling? It is pretty hilarious as long as they are okay. Seen a guy's brand new board get split right in half on a small day. Guy looked so embarrased. Everyone went "ewwww.... and then 5 seconds later it was all laughter". The OB pier has wide pilings, so if you hit those things... quit surfing.
Also have seen a guy jump off the pier to surf the SS, which is illegal. About a 20 foot drop at low tide. Home boy tried to toss it out in front of himself, but he kept the leash on. It landed RIGHT on top of his board, like face first. Jumping off a pier on a chest high day is a novelty. Thats what you get. There was a video of a guy jumping off the pier in IB on a solid 15-20 foot day. He got one wave, almost dies in the video, gets rescued, then gets ticketed. One of the only times I have seen a real reason to jump off a pier though.
Lol, I've only ever shot the OB pier, and it was on a pretty small day. Never climbed out on a jetty or jumped off a pier in order to paddle out. I figure if it's too big to legit paddle, it's too big for me. I do use jetty rips though. Used one today. Holy flying fkakk it got COLD up here pretty much overnight! Upwelling. Stupid cape gradient! Still sizable hurricane swell. I paddled out at pretty much the only wind-protected spot for 20 miles. A very stompy and closed-out beachbreak. After 20 minutes a few barneys decided to follow me and almost drowned. Seriously, if you can barely stand up on a normal day, a beach hazard day is not for your kind. Dolphin surfed right at me on a bomb set, then jumped out the back while I ducked under the lip. Sweet! Sorry if I got in yer line, bra! Porpoises got the internets, right? Can we get back to our regularly scheduled southern hemi's yet? All the news coverage of this 'cane swell is kookifying everything.
If that's creepy I'm the creepiest dude around. I would not have been able to keep my eyes on the surfing with that standing so close. Would have had to leave the beach for fear I might have "accidentally" bit it.
