Hey Bay Staters, more sucky news for yous guys.

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/03/us/massachusetts-shark-hit/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

This is the second GW sighting near the shores of Plymouth this summer, which is strange because it's within Cape Cod bay.

    Thoughts:

    1. I'd still rather surf with these large fellas lumbering around than those perpetually pissed-off bulls you southerns swim with.
    2. If all female kayakers look like that I'm the newest enthusiast. They must be cali transplants.

They didn't land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on them.

Agreed on point 1 Mr. Mad Atom, something I often ponder.

Well, they were sightseeing for seals.-- aren't seals the great white sharks favorite meal?

Yeah had these ladies ever watched shark week they would know seals = sharks.

Personally i would rather surf with smaller sharks, when the big guys get pissed off the survival rate isn't as high as getting attacked by a smaller shark. Since shark attacks are incredibly rare.

mad atom...had a very eery feeling on a extremely foggy day this week...everything below me looked like a shadow, then the tide drained and the river water filled the area which didn't really make things any better...then a fargin' seal surfaced, dove and created a huge ripple not 10 ft away from me, almost shart myself

but you're right in a sense that i find myself wondering about occasionally, i think a lot of times with the whites is seems as though they nip someone and then they're all like, "wait, my bad. nevermind." then it seems like the bulls and tigers just dgaf and just rip anything and everything to shreads

i think it must all come down to an inferiority complex or something...

dude the south is the best hands down. the gnarlyest and the heavyest with tiger sharks the size of hondas and hammerheads the size of mini coopers. we also have great whites the size of fiats.

Strongly disagree with point 1... I'd rather get my foot or hand nipped every once in a while than get my legs bit off once.
We hear the stories all the time about about people getting bit down south. Usually they interview the guy and he acts cool and says it's no big deal, just part of life...
When there's a story in WA, SA or Norcal it usually starts with a pic of a memorial on the beach where the guy got clipped.
It's only a matter of time til someone in Mass gets mauled.

You make a valid point nynj...not only do you bring cynical humor to the table, but also a nice dose of pragmatism.

Any of you guys ever want to just be swallowed by the ocean while you're sitting out there? I'm not on some morbid sh!t, but sometimes, when in the presence of the timeless and immovable, I just want to merge with it and leave this circus behind.

Pier, I get those eery feelings too. It's usually on days that aren't as good and you spend more time sitting on the board alone with your thoughts. In better conditions I spend more time surfing and less time thinking.

On Xmas eve last year I went out for a morning session. Good waves...maybe just over chest high so I was out a good ways. I think there was one other person in the water. Anyway, as I was looking out for the next set a head popped out of the water no more than 15ft from me. The seal saw me, smiled, and dunked under. I too nearly sharted.

A couple years ago some dolt got attacked off Cape Cod. He was swimming off a sand bar 400+ yards out so he for sure deserved it. Maine is mellow. I've only seen two seals in two years of surfing so I'm comfortable saying there's no danger. NorCal, however, scares me so I agree with you there. One person killed every year by a George Washington in that region.

Maybe the solution is to have a few bait humans outside the lineup, around that 400 yd mark...sacrifices, nah mean?

For many reasons SUP'ers are perfect for that. I mean...they're out there anyway, right?

Just kidding, friends. But seriously, I'd rather them get eaten than me.

I'm in SC so never seen a seal while surfing.

A few weeks ago on a 2-3ft day a dolphin fin popped up no more than 15 feet away from me...probably more like 7-10 feet away. Usually dolphins are a welcomed site, but for a second that scared the **** out of me.

The thing is, when you are lying prone on a board your profile more resembles their grub (i.e., turtles or seals). That being said, SUPers might be able to provide an early warning since they have a better view.

Not sure why this bloke nipped a kayak, unless he was the curious, playful type.
