George Greenough wrote about his GWS encounters at Byron Bay. It's a spooky read and enough to keep me away from that place.
byron is kinda funny. the whole world goes there to surf ...... yet, its not really a 'surf spot'....but the touristy thing to do is drive up to the lighthouse...and look down upon tallows beach....which.......is sharky.
I was out there about 2 months ago. Definitely didn't seem like it was a go to surf spot but there's a spot called the wreck that I checked out while there and saw a sick picture of at a bar on a good day. Also, a few kids who I met out there showed me some nice pictures of the pass (which is literally the next beach down from the attack). Also yeah definitely not surprised at all that it's sharky there. I found the picture I saw at the bar online, guess like other spots you just have to wait for the right day.
in that hood - if memory serves - when the swell is up and NOT going to the goldie - 'da boys were off either to anga or lennox.
Here's a link to the story, sad day for this man and his family... http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/09/byron-bay-shark-attack-victim-british-expat
