Yes, some of us really do like HH+ and crave it every day. However, I'll take what I can get, i'm happy with anything rideable but I don't really get to "scratch the itch" anymore unless it's over chest high. It's nice to pacify myself on waist - chest and I really do have a blast and am thankful for every wave I get but after a while I NEED a HH+ wave to feel that rush that you can only get from a wave of consequence.
The pictures you posted do NOT look like what it looked like up here. If I was out in conditions that you posted, I would have been on the 5'8 Disco throwing tail all over the place. But again, your photos are NOT like what we had. Cut that size about 33% and take all that shape away. And then yeah, thats what we go.
You make some good points..there are many SB friendly dumpy shore breaks though. I find it interesting how some people will continually bring up that there are some many HH+ days and use social media pics as reference when so many of those photos are of the same day. I've seen guys yesterday go through their quiver with a stack of boards by the car as if it was 15' pipe and they just couldn't find the perfect combo to slot. It's all good, just little entertaining at times..
Just be glad you got off this island when you did. Sounds like you made the right call for sure. Maybe one of these swells will actually hit on a weekend and I will do the same. I would have paid solid money to surf in conditions that DawnPatrolSUP posted. No sh**. cash money.
Yeah, I am not even greedy either. I don't even care about the rush of consequence, I just want to look down the line and see a nice, open piece of canvas in front of me to paint. I just want some faces and sections that will hold up tall enough to let me do my thing. Dance a little. Swing some tail. Tuck in and out a few times. Try and land an air out in the flats. I don't need epic, I just need something I can work with. Something that is just sitting there waiting to get slashed. Is that too much to ask?
Yeah, every dog has it's day. I have been pleasantly suprised with the last few names storms and what they produced here. Great shape, lots of fun. Ol' Ed just wasn't that guy. Maybe he is going to come back around one last time and prove me wrong. You hear that Edouard? YOU HEAR ME! COME BACK! SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT.... But please, dont make landfall =)
With you 100% on that, I don't need to feel like i'm going to die, but it's nice to push the envelope. More than anything having a lot of real estate to be creative and do what you have in your mind is worth a million bucks! Nothing worse then loading up for a maneuver only to have the wave take a poop
2 reasons I'm glad the OP got skunked: 1) he/she sounds like a tool. Ignorant, self-entitled, and lazy. A real Triple Threat of doucheosity. 2) this kind of thing weeds out the masses. Surfing as and always will be an unpredictable pastime, like all ocean activity. If you can't handle that, then stick to the skatepark/snowboard terrain park.
Suns coming up as I pull up to the beach. Been driving since 330 am to make it for DP. I know that swells are not as predicable as we would like but holy moly it was FLAT when I was expecting it to be chest high. I had to hunt around S jersey and then come back to the same crowded spot that was working OK with everyone else. Had a blast but whoever started the "closeout" thread screwed with my head. Only got to surf half as much as I wanted to but dangit I got some backhand action in tune- dialed the new stick in. #whahappened?
What was the tide doing? I hit Dawn Patrol yesterday morning and it was low tide, and dropping still. I was literally the ONLY person in the ocean. No cars in the lot. A couple joggers on the beach. It had gone from chest high to flat-waist with the low tide. I know I am hours south of you, but the tides must have been somewhat low up there. I assume that is why you encountered the lake Atlantic. Same thing happened down here. It got WAY better about 6 hours after I got out. I mean, like 5 times the size better.
That is the disclaimer that I put on my surf website. Under the report/forecast it says "ALL THIS DATA IS BASED ON THE MID-HIGH TIDE RANGE. If you enter the water at ANY other time, this data is garbage. I know Delmarva is somewhat tide dependant also. So, I don't care if its 7ft @ 10 seconds. When the tide is low and dropping or even on the rise right after, this place is flat. No matter what the buoys say.
Got there at mid tide going out. I knew it was going to be a factor. Couldnt tell if swell hadn't filled in yet or what was up. Usually I would see something at the spot I checked but they looked like longboard waves.
def had some 100+ yard lefts with some back to them (solid chest+ high maybe) but was scratching my head at the conditions at low tide. I know the tide allows the swell in but I have surfed many a windswell at lowtide.
Man being from Maryland you should of just surfed Assateague the dawn patrol started off slow, but after low tide started pumping out pretty consistent 3-5ft waves with some solid workable corners!
3rd worst AFTER SC and GA I bet NC, MD, DE, NJ, NY, RI MA, and ME and NH were all better and OP, I feel bad that you took they day off and dont know your area so you didnt know what spot to surf
ACNJ is only 2 hours from baltimore when I haul ass and has proved itself many times to me over the years. 2 different worlds. Seek the dirty jerz if you have the chance to.... seek it.....
Fair enough about G**ch's, but I'm simply comparing the forecast at G**ch's to what actually happened at G**ch's. I don't have time to run around to different spots so I always end up at the break that's 1 mile from my house. Sadly, this break is known for mushy, slopey waves. It does get really good here, however, when you get to that HH, OH level...saw it several times last winter. They hold really nicely. That plus a perfect rip along the rocks makes for a lot of fun when it's that big. Yes, I do enjoy surfing waves that size.
what other states you surf this swell? ITs funny you cant just admit that Florida is mediocre at best, EVERY other state save SC and GA is better than FL, my experience (save ME and MA) tells me this, what tells you otherwise? I dont see sissurfdog trying to claim otherwise, know why? he knows. You dont and try to claim otherwise enjoy praleen and butt icecream
