went to send back my xcel 3/2 drylock because some of the seams are leaking. Noticed on xcel's return process that a crease in the chest panel will void the warranty (and of course mine has a big azz crease). Anyway, got me wondering what you fellow east coasters think is the best method for long term wetsuite storage. I have previously thrown my suits in a big rubbermaid bin (which is what caused the crease) after they were completely dried, because I was worried hanging the up for long periods would stretch the shoulders out. What are you guys finding works best?
btw i always throw mine down on the ground or hang it over a railing this ensures a neighborhood cat will come piss on it
Use the hanger that the suite comes on when you buy it... Usually one of Those big plastic kinds like Tard mentioned - your shoulders will not get worn out... Unless you use a reg plastic or metal one.... Btw- when the wetsuite company originally ships the suite- they usually fold them in thirds and this can on return create a large crease across the front. Send it back anyways- it's always worked for me, they never give an issue- just a new suit or repair.
I use the rubber maid bin. Trick is to lay the suit out flat and fold the knees into the chest, then cross the arms over the top. THis keeps the chest flat - a la - no crease. Smaller suits on the bottom of the bin, thicker towards the top.
I made a hanger for mine out of a PVC pipe. It's pretty thick so it prevents any creases. I just leave it in the garage.
got it brah! Wetsuite I planned on doing so. I'm just hoping they don't take over a month to get it back to me like o'neill did last time I sent one to them. Speaking of, anyone had experience with xcel? What was the turnaround?
I had to send my old 6/5 back to Xcel multiple times. I noticed the crease line in their warranty policy and gave them a call about it before I shipped. They said it wouldn't be an issue. I think a safe bet for turnaround is three weeks.
I hang my suits on the hangers that came with them. 4/3 hooded Excel and 3/2 Excel. Sometimes I'll take them off and lay them flat just to give them a change. Over long periods I've found it helpful to actually bring them into the shower and give them a rinsing to keep from drying out. My suits last.
also any exposure to light weakens the wetsuit over time. I read that when they sit in stores under flourescent lights they weaken. I store my better wetsuits in the closet in darkness
All my wetsuites and bootys and glüves go directly into the shower with me after surfing for a complete rinsing. Then I hang the suite inside-out from the shower head. Next day, if I'm not using it, the suite goes into the garage to finish interior drying. Once inside is dry, I turn the suite back outside in and it continues to hang in the garage until next use. Storage for the warm months consists of a heavy duty hanger and putting the suit in my closet. Never fold your wetsuite if you don't have to. It gives them creases. The end.
no decent surfer would show up to the swell of the fall with a wrinkle in their suit, its just bad form
I figure that's the worst way to treat a wetsuite because it's heaviest when wet, so the shoulders are getting the full weight and are getting stretched on the hangar. I never hang my suite on a hangar. I always fold it over a thick rod so there are no creases and nothing digs into the neoprene. Even when dry, prolonged hanging on any type of hangar will stretch out the shoulders, just from the weight of the suite. Living in CA, I wear my suite year-round, but, if I do skip a month for whatever reason, I lightly fold the dry suit and lay it in a drawer.
That's what I was worried about, especially with my heavier suites, like my 5/4. As an east coaster, I usually have four months or so where I am not wearing any wetsuite. Then I go from a 3/2, to a 4/3, etc. When I am actively wearing a suite, it gets rinsed out with freshwater after every use and hung folded over in my guest bathroom shower to dry. Once it's too cold/warm for the suite, it gets dried completely and goes into long term storage. Wide hangers sounds like the most popular method...I'm just worried about stretching if the suite's hanging for 6-8 months at a time.
