I've been making foils since 1980, thicker ones too,,, but you are right I first came across the whale bump notion on Swaylocks, on an earlier thread.
Forgive me, but I'm new here. This is the Million $ surfboard dude?!? Many thoughts come to mind. 1) While this might all be snake earl, y'all big dog sales dudes gotta be a little envious of someone who could wangle 7 figs for a bloody surfboard! I mean, c'mon. That's sellin refrigerators to eskimos right there y'all. 2) Like rcarter said, he's gettin free advertisin. That don't seem right. 3) Provide links to flow modeling data. 4) I, in my simpleness, always thought that the best fins would be copied from those on a real, living, sea critter. Are there any sea critters with bumpy leading edge fins? If so, dude could be onto something. 5) Back to 1. Just damn... my 2 centavos
hes getting free adverts since his products are non conventional, I dont want to call them cutting-edge, as their performance and utility has yet to be proved in mass market. Valuable products sell themselves novelty fades into obscurity
Discussing what? You have made a lot of claims, but we never see any data. You use this forum, among others, as a platform for free advertising. That is why you just post pictures of your product. If you were really looking for a design discussion, the pictures would be followed by a description of the features and some data to show you have actually looked at flow simulation. I am still not sure why Micah allows you to spam the forum without actually paying for ad space.
Brew thank you for saying that to him so polite and grown up like. Maybe this will actually register with him. This is exactly what I wanted to say to Roy but he is so annoying I just can't take the high road with him.
Flow simulation, you mean like that used by the majority of surfboard and fin manufacturers? I use real flow, not simulated. The BLEF feature has been the subject of many academic articles, do some research, then let's talk about it.
Let's face it, the only data used regularly by the surf industry comes in the form of points per ride. which from a scientific standpoint is meaningless.
I'm considering a data producing fin box made by a company ( custom ) in San Diego which measures lift and drag, ay 14k Us but am more in favour of real world testing, because that is what counts. The drag. lift and aoa improvements of BLEF foils have been tested fairly well by academics however, research it. Our testing confirms it. We have independent ride reports if you'd like to see them.
You should get the data producing fin-box. You are a controversial figure Roy; backing up your claims with data would do great justice to the many server-farms that have burned to the ground under the weight of your online 'discussions.' Not many people agree with your business model, but there are many on here who are hardcore capitalists all the same. As the only surfboard building millionaire on Swellinfo, you owe it to the masses to silence your detractors once and for all. I'm not calling BS on your designs, I've never ridden one and my understanding of board science is minimal. Nonetheless, everybody wants to see controversial claims backed up.
Condescending jerk off response again. That's right gnomey your stuff is the only surf gear that matters, everything else is just indusrty BS right? Post up or shut up douche canoe. Let's see these rid ereports, post em here.
you asked for it: http://www.roystuart.biz/2014/10/blef-spitfire-fin-for-noseriding.html http://www.roystuart.biz/2014/09/steve-shearer-surfs-warp-drive-fin.html http://www.roystuart.biz/2014/09/review-tubercled-spitfire.html http://www.roystuart.biz/2014/05/from-shaper-paul-cannon-of-napier.html
Roy, I gotta ask you, the prices. You've got to explain the prices. I'm a libertarian, borderline anarcho, I love capitalism. It drives innovation. Be that as it may, your boards are the price of condos. If you sell them, more power to you. You make more money off one board than most shapers make in half a career. If it works, kudos to you for capitalizing on a luxury board demand. I just need to hear it. Anything explaining the price.
In the past Roy has stated that he charges what he feels his creations are worth and that no amount of arguing from us will change his mind. He has to buy those helemts in XXXXXXXXL to fit his big head.
Guys he's a pain in the ass to speak with sometimes but if you mill through that site there is some interesting stuff. Here's one for you: "Charles Taylor in Maine has been busy. A hollow wooden surfboard made to a Roy Stuart 'Earl' design is in the Maine Maritime Museum." The unholy union has been consecrated stateside- in a MUSEUM! In all seriousness though, I don't think those reviews are made up, and to be fair, you guys don't ask anyone else for scientific data to back up their designs/claims, do you?
I'd like to see one of his fins in rotation here. Give us one Roy, we will try it, post our thoughts, and ship it to the next member. Proof in the pudding, and we'd all like to try it out. Hell, you might turn us into believers.
