The debate here is really not Skating vs. Surfing.

Instead, we should discuss you, Mr. 40 YO skater-dude.

Douchebag vs. Not Douchebag, I'd like everyone's opinion.... Pros, Cons, Supporting evidence.

When it comes to the style of airs, surfing has nothing on skateboarding. The majority of surf airs are sloppy as all hell and landed in whitewater. Still incredible, but it doesn't even approach the style and grace of a well executed lien air on a skateboard. Double grabs? Froggies? That sh*t just looks silly. It's still sick, and I'd do it if I could, but it doesn't look good.

As far as the dynamics go, Salt's got a point. To gain speed on a sectioney wave and hit that closeout lip at the right moment, there is some dynamic sh*t going down, at an incredibly fast rate. Street skating, you have time to think about your trick before you attempt it.

Still- seeing airs on a wave of consequence would be nice.

take a look at most airs landed on a surfboard. they're landed in the crumbling part of the wave, and most of the time in the whitewater. why? people like to walk off the beach after surfing instead of breaking their ankles and hobbling off. there are very few mid-face landings, and when there are, those guys take a huge impact. (see Nate Fletcher). white water is nice and soft for landings (it has air in it). airs are like doing a floater except you're launching over a section instead of, uh, floating over it.

Since we're talking about airs and waves of consequence, you could say what you want, but...

He was actually wearing the suit when he did it... Which is obvious proof that if you rep Volcom you can pull 540's.

where do u people come from?obviously u don't know shyt about skating, and u don't know shyt about surfing.

first off skating gave rise to surfing, not the other way around.second skating is so much easier, its more dangerous in terms of breaking bones, but u cant drown skating.i skated for over 15 maybe even 20 years so I can talk shyt lol.I cant do airs surfing,i can fly off the lip and land behind the wave that's about it.skating I can drop in a 12 ft bowl get 8 feet of air and land no problem.not hard at all.

have u heard about all the pros breaking their ankles?jjf, medina, and many others who I do not care for.when u land an air in the flats, its not easy at all.and this is on 3 ft waves.how does overhead waves make it easier?

last kudos to slater for shyttin on little john john.pops can still whoop the youngins in any conditions, except trestles

In a snow or skate half pipe that would be a 720, before the reverse at the end. IMO I would compare surfing to both. A straight jump snow/skate that would only be a 540, before the reverse.

Just my view on it, depends if you want to compare it to snow/skate half pipe, either way it was awesome.

its nearly impossible to compare skating and surfing. sure they share a lot of the same balance and some general maneuvers but skating is so different. when you skate a bowl or a half pipe it resembles a wave for sure, but its the same size/shape/angle etc every single time, whereas when you are surfing every wave is different - size/shape/angle and all that. you're also doing it on a much longer and heavier board than if skating. landing in the flats is extremely dangerous, guys break bones in their ankles, feet and legs all the time. When you are skating you are always landing on the same angle you took off on. Granted if you fall you are much more likely to get hurt since you are hitting a solid surface, but i stand by the fact that they are two opposite ends of the spectrum. that all being said, when I was at my highest point in skating i could feel the translation when going up for a big snap but with some major differences. when you do something like that on a half pipe you are always going to get the speed back going back down ramp, whereas you have to make sure to allow yourself to not overturn and fall behind the wave losing speed or pump down the line to regain speed etc. Snowboarding is another one, while they all share a lot of the same basic principles the first time i went snowboard i couldn't help but try to lift my front foot and point the board in the direction i wanted to go like a skateboard. but getting a big carve in fresh powder was the closest thing i've felt to ripping into a wall of water (unless when you are skating a half pipe you are doing slides etc). but when you are snowboarding you have to be so much more aware of where your weight is leaning or you'll catch an edge so fast you won't know what hit you. just my two cents from my experiences.....

You can't compare the two. Sure you can compare airs of surfing/skating, but the that's pointless since A) the whole process of getting airborne is completely diffrent. Moving wave vs stationary ramp/ledge. And B) there's much more to surfing than airs. Skaters who also surf have an advantage in the air department but there not better surfers. If they are good surfers it's because they surf allot. Not because they skate. The skills needed to surf, on the wave and off, you won't get from skating. You don't learn to flow with a wave in a skateboard
