I've seen a pretty big uptick in the amount of shoulder hopping donkeys lately. What's up with these guys sitting off the peak, paddling 90%, pulling off at the last second and crumbling the lip? come on now guys.

experienced same recently. all i can tell you is what i know is that they are stuck in late-intermediacy ability-wise
and are going about making up for it in the wrong manner. our sport is nuanced.

I was shoulder hoping all day saturday claiming the barrels that all the super shredder gnar pros in Belamr wasted on 11th ave. True story dudes!

I understand the frustration, but meh...I usually don't worry about it. A few drop-ins here and there don't really bother me unless it become constant and then a reasonable conversation or two usually fixes it.

Had it happen yesterday a couple times...once in the barrel and had to scream in order to call a guy off who didn't see me...I asked him what happened and he explain he literally just didn't see me (I believed him...I was pretty deep). Another time dropped in and a guy just burned me...few others asked him about what he did and he apologized. No big deal...

Come on ihate...just float the lip ;-)

Interesting, I think we have 3 different definitions of "shoulder hopping" here.

    1. Paddling for a wave when a deeper rider is up and riding, then pulling back at the last second, crumbling the section.

    2. Standard dropping in.

    3. Taking off on the shoulder, rather than the peak (perhaps when another surfer is too deep and can't make the section).

they're not out there to surf. They just want to wear the uniform.
you know there not going. you can see it in ther face. So whats the big whoop? float the section and give em a big smile on the way back out.
would you rather have them all sitting on the peak with you?

Haven't seen any more of that up here than what I'd consider typical, but I did see a TON of dbags this weekend who'd position themselves too far outside. They'd half-paddle for a wave then give up, and by then it was too late for me or others positioned properly to capitalize on it. Super annoying, especially when you hear them speaking French.

Bottom line, there was way too many people in the water this past weekend. Can't wait for winter.

#1, when crowded, when you're not really sitting on the shoulder at all, and the guy is too deep and has a 10% chance of making the wave, is not a problem in my opinion AT ALL. bring on the angry responses.

good breakdown. I dealt with too many of #1 happening in the past few months. On some of these better swells the donks just do that "i'm totally paddling for this even though someone else is dropping in on it" move and crumbling/chandeliering the section in front of the guy already on the wave.

i saw it happen to a couple of buddies to that are pretty well respected in the water by some kids we had never seen before so that exacerbates the problem.

also agreed there were soooo many people on it. you had a swell on a saturday, nice temps on air and sea and a solid swell. at one point i counted 42 guys out between 16th and 18th in belmar. now i know that's a popular spot and all but great googly moogly.

I thought shoulder hopping was ihl go to move!

and in jerz, I always line up on someone I dont know in the (likely) case they blow it

cant let waves go to waste

places where there are a lot of bodysurfers, there are no missed waves.....bodysurfers are like the parasites of waveriders, making sure to suck the juices out of any waves you miss.

easy way to triple your wavecount

and if someone shoulder crumbles me in jerz when I am surfing , I say 'listen, I'm going to make it. every time. **** off'

Yeah I took photos going down the beaches and no joke I counted 300 people in the water between 8th and 18th! That's ridiculous! I've been surfing moco alot more this year after relocating but still I've never seen it that packed(besides the inlet) in mid october.

So in a two week spell of surf, lets say you do this 10 times. You're going to get drilled/run over at least once, based on the math. Keep it up. Roll the dice enough times, it comes up snake eyes.

i'm not talking about taking my chances and dropping in. i'm talking about getting in proper position on a wave (not on shoulder), taking a few paddles, then having to pull out repeatedly because of people hogging waves. i saw too many guys taking off way too deep on Saturday. i don't drop in on anyone, period. i learned my lessons as a kid. but, when i see the same 3-4 guys taking off on every single wave that comes down the pike and not making them, i call it wave-hogging. totally annoying, and as bad as dropping in on someone.

It's called snowballing you noobs... is it acceptable to drop in on stupid fu (king boogieboarders is the real question.. literally 85% will see you screaming down the line drop in and completely disregarded you. I'm sorry but unless your cool I have no respect for the lay down brigade
