There used to be something called etiquette in surfing. Not only the etiquette of not dropping in on someone, but also not paddling back over to the peak after every single wave past everyone who is waiting for the next set wave. Yes you can say you are just trying to go deeper, but if you do that after every wave that's a wave hog in my opinion. This happens a lot with guys who are generally good surfers too, but are often not locals at a particular break. Real locals might give it a rest for a set wave or two and let some others have at it instead of immediately back-paddling everyone and taking the next set wave. Usually this is done by guys who show up in packs also instead of alone, then complain about the resulting paddle battles caused by their own stupid actions. I don't care who you are...do this a few times and you are getting shoulder hopped or dropped in on. At the very least, I hope to snowball your wave and **** it up so you complain about it on the internet and hopefully never come back to the spot.
id say that's a pretty accurate statement, most people just paddle out and don't do anything.they wait til the lineup is at maximum capacity, see 5 guys paddling for a wave and then they think hey this is the wave iv been waiting for time to goooooooooo!!!! don't surf with crowds.there were probably thousands of empty spots in central nj this weekend.i found a really cool spot, one that 99% of nj surfers are too lazy to look for,and its at one of the most crowded spots just down the beach.I got some good laughs in the water looking to my right and seeing 4 guys take off on the same wave, set after set
pretty funny thinking about it people were probably looking down the beach at me thinking how did he get there
if they're not making it, then you are within your rights to paddle-battle them or possibly even drop in on them for the next few waves. Saturday I dropped in on a guy, he got drilled pretty hard, came up and started yelling what the **** man! I just looked at him and said, sorry man but you missed the last 3 that you went for. He just kind of muttered to himself and shook his head. Whats he really going to say?? Personally, I avoid that situation, because if I blow a takeoff, rare, admittedly, but it happens, I'll relegate myself to a lesser spot in the lineup for the next 20 minutes/half hour or so until I get a better read on what the wave is doing.
this! And when they don't pull off in time and go over the falls, thats a "snowman". In this day of SUP's and "high Perfomance" longboards, sitting on the inside of a long wave with a couple different sections on a fish is one of the only way to get waves without joining the sh!t show previously mentioned. It also helps to shadow someone you see miss waves repeatedly. I'll snowball out wave hogs on purpose. Then say "oops sorry." If they paddle back out past me.
you did the right thing. what can i say? I'm too nice of a guy. lol. i won't mention the spot i surfed, but it's the only place i've ever had problems with aggro stuff. i kinda settled on surfing there on Saturday, and voila, lesson learned (again).
Whoaaa! Idk man how many times did you get dropped in on? How many times did you blow it? What colors was your wetsuite? How many stickers were on the nose of your board? These things are a variable factors in determining your answer...
Totally! Blow one good peak, oh well. Two, and I start thinking this guy sucks and doesn't deserve to out there. Three, and you are invisible, a non entity, not even a mosquito. And if I blow it a couple times, I will go to the shallow end and get my zen back before having at the crowded peak. If you don't have your A game on a good day at a good contested break, you should accept the fact that you are not Kelly and go down the beach a bit. Quit embarrassing yourself. Tomorrow you may have lightning in a bottle, but not today., It's alright. I'm not getting paid to surf. For a good reason.
Sounds like you guys are catching up to us in the Surfpocalypse. The only way to stop this is for surfing to become unpopular again. Bring back the 70s
They don't bother me as much as kooks following me around like a shadow because I keep catching waves and they don't. They see me doing what they want to be doing so they follow me like a puppy. It's so annoying, had to shake the fleas all day every day the past 4 days. I have to throw them the fade manuever, or paddle one direction like I'm repositiong then do a 180 and sprint in the opposite direction before they realize what happened.
+1...thought it would be a little thinner out there too, little disappointed it wasn't and continued to get boxed in...that and the incoming tide, and the fat, thick long friggin' period made it all a little tricky...still wasn't as pad as the swells at the end of august-that was a total circus, at least yesterday when i did get a line i didn't have jump through hoops to get down the line and had space to move
Don't you both live in belmar? Why not have a bench off or slap off? Which everyone fancies your pickle!
thank you for putting quotes around those first two words. it was something that needed to be done. i know a guy that rides these exclusively. enters and wins contests. did an interview for the local paper bragging about how many he has won. only thing is; doesn't surf very well.
Is this piece of excellent advice for me IHL? All the vast amounts of surf knowledge you drop on here is off the charts and all your opinions are valid! I mean how can anybody compare to that right! I really like you ihl I do! I mean your so OG in this New Jersey surf scene and you've got a 2007 SI join date to prove it. Maybe we can be friends IHL you know you buy the beer I'll bring the drugs...
