if anybody wants a fw but doesn't know which one; well, my potatonator works quite well in small but quality surf...say 2/4ft or 3/5ft. if its mush try one of their quad-fish designs.
Regarding the ride experience, the Coil has more flex and feels better under my feet. The Megamind is an grovel board that requires you to have the correct fins on it and requires a lot of rider input (something I like since I like to pump just like on my Carver skateboard). This board I have had in overead surf and fin wise, I just tweak it with a Nubster. On tiny days when I need the most drive, I use MR-TFX/Gx rears. If it gets to thigh/waist or a punchy knee, I use a Nubster Pivot. On the upper end, I throw a regular Nubster to keep things under control. Keep in mind that its only compared to an FST Firewire. To be fair, the Firewire that sold me to the brand was a Rapidfire Spitfire but could not afford a board that would not last so I got FST. They did not ride the same and actually liked the Rapidfire better. On that note, my newer FST Potatonator looks like the surface of the moon. It's full of presure dings and out of all places where my fingers go when I duckdive. I think you can't go wrong with giving it a try. Don't get too creative initially and let Mike do his thing so you get the Coil feel.
"the ONLY ding I've ever fixed is when I let my kid sled on it and he missed the ramp and went into the street...thats how confident I was that nothing would happen to it." stop this nonsense.
this is pure insanity! if your gonna do this kind of circus stunt... at least put a leash on him. what did the bottom look like after? looks like he's having a blast... so even if it's not the intended purpose.... it's doing it's job.
Every new board I have ever bought has been the best board I have ever owned. Not sure if it really is or it just feels that way. That feeling always fades away over time, but I have found it's faded far less with my firewires. Every time I get on them I am surprised by what they can do and they never seem to go dead like some of the other boards I have owned. Coils are nice though.
Just a few faint scratches. And I'll do it again this winter...just not into the road. I sold that board, and the buyer looked it over for a long time, and never noticed a thing.
though i'm sure they do this this mentality is far more pervasive than a marketing campaign. there are SO MANY SURFERS riding boards too small for them. just watch 'em NOT CONNECT sections. imho this single issue makes golfers out of intermediates when it didn't have to.
