Roy is making it rain these days. Million dollar surfboard sales. Sheeeetttt..... Channel Islands has to sell 15 surfboards to make that much.
That's what you think. The other side of your brain AKA Chuckabooboo has been making fins. Does your right hand not know what the left has been up to? Have you ever seen the movie Fight Club? You could be burning the candle at both ends and not even know it...
I haven't seen it yet, I read that it is good but am not a fan of himself, although the role probably suits him.
Yeah price wise he's competitive, no doubt. If they live up to his word, innovation wise, hell it might even be a deal in the grand scheme of things.
Roy: What have reviewers told you about the Gull Wing BLEF fin? the 9"? Seems like a similar concept to the current squirrel fin that I have been rocking. Interested to hear how the scalloped leading edge and the sharp 90 degree angle on that would translate. This is what I am using now but its a 9":
Right off the bat, having them in my hands, yes that is a fair market price range competitive to other manufacturers. If I didn't know this was from a 3d printer, I would have thought it was mass produced via injected molded plastic compounds of some sort. The gull wing has some flex, the others not that I can tell without putting them in the fin box. Nice finish and colors, pretty cool looking products. I would guess they work good in certain conditions in certain boards, just like most other style fins do. We will find out!
SISURF: let me know how this one treats you. Is it the 9"? There is ZERO flex on my squirrel. Its like a kitana blade.
I use the 8" pictured above on my 9'0" single fin. It loosened it up alot compared to standard fin profiles, and it still holds in good surf up to aboot chest plus. I want a 9" for bigger stuff. Lots of snap and release. No hum. Durable.
Yeah, john threw in the 9" squirrel when I picked up the 9'3" from him. I use little side bites on it. Haven't played much as a single, but I like it pushed almost all the way up front. When I move it even half way back or more, it just locks in soooo much. Like, the first time I went to drop, I straight fell sideways because the board didn't move. I got the hang of it after the second wave, but yeah, you can't drop in and ankle tweek the LB to get your line with the 9" squirrel towards the tail. That I can tell you. It's holds its line once you lock in, but I was not pleased with the responsiveness of it. I think I would go 7" to maybe 8" inch if I get another squirrel. Its a lot of fin.
The 8" True Ames Squirrel Cutaway in the photo above with Longboard House on it is the SAME EXACT FIN I USE. It has flex, I swear to god. Screw it in a fin box and give it a crank with your hand holding the fat end. It bends pretty easily, then snaps right back. I love the way it works compared to other fin designs I have used on my longboards. But I am no noserider. I like to cutback, do off the lips, and floaters on a longboard in clean lined up surf from knee to head high. It gets too squirrely on bigger faster days, but rather than put a stiff, 9", hatchet style fin in it, I just take my shortboard out. Sometimes it is better to have a longboard out in bigger days if it is clean and not closed out to make sections a shortboard would be going too slow to make. That is why I am curious to explore and expand my comfort range in bigger waves on a hplb. I've gone out with a hplb on a few days well overhead by accident and made some awesome waves and gone soooo fast I can't believe it. Eating it really really sucks on a big day on a big piece of foam and glass, so that is why I want a fin that is responsive but can still hold on good waves.
