The funky thing about this thread is that waynetheinsaaane rides you as a quad, jackass.

 

Never been on one but I have a similar shape...Chemistry Alchemist. Goes great in small to medium surf. Usually run it with the FCS MR-TFX fin set up. Gives you that Quad like projection but you can still get that smooth vertical / top to bottom flow like a Thruster.

 

I'd do it if the size/voume is right for you. Rusty makes a good board...

 

get a fish. like 5'6x20"x2.5" that should suit you fine. You are small enough to go on the smaller side of things.

Seriously though, go talk to a shaper, tell him what you want the board to do, and go from there. Don't just buy a board off the rack or from craigslist and hope it works. Thats a crap shoot every time until you have ridden a bunch of boards and know exactly what you like.

That will be you best bet, vs coming to this forum and askin a bunch of mokes what they think you should be riding.

 

6'4" WRV Nugget...has the 5 fin option...will work for what your looking for in a board and when you move down to your 5'4", you'll have a step-up or option for other conditions.

Someone suggested custom on here:

Sashi Lyford at 5star surfboards up in NH will shape you a brand new custom for $550. He is all the rage up that way.

There area a few custom dudes in between too. Some guy in Boston I've heard of vaguely. It was a dragon or asian themed shop name. Worth looking into.

I would say go to Levy in Narragansett, but I tried calling him about a custom and he kept trying to sell me a board he made for his kid instead. It was a very Seinfield-esque phone conversation. I kept telling him what I wanted, and he kept saying he had a fish he made for his son. It was really bizarre, and I was bummed because I wanted him to make me that board and he just wasn't up for it.

Andy McDermott shapes out of Black Point Surf Shop in Scarborough ME. Higgins is a fun beach nearby.

Problem is very few dudes at the local level are calculating volume, so you have to be a mathematician or guess the vol by using the CI boardbuilder feature on their website, and then to be safe size up. I obsess on volume.

There is a dude west of NYC that shapes with a CNC machine that can calculate volume. Forget his name.

 

5star sticks are pretty good. Have had a couple and still have one. Similar to Vec boards and others made for the EC. Usually has volume taken from the tail and put into the chest. Good foil overall with them.

You talking about Chino Surfboards in Chinatown? The site is bostonsurf.com and I think the guy is on here under frankyfingers or some handle like that. Don't know anyone yet who's got one of his sticks but looks like he makes some nice ones.

Vec is solid and Natti, the guy who has glassed for him over the years is now shaping his own as well and they are solid boards too. Plenty of groveling capable of being done on their boards.

Not sure of #SaltyCaroline's experience level, though I'm glad I hadn't invested in a custom shape prior to getting a good handle on what I like and what size, and learning more about boards and surfing in general. There are a lot of variables in shaping and having one of them out of balance seems like it could be the difference between a hit or miss.

As a beginner of course you dont know what you want or need. Thats why you go to the shaper, be HONEST about your abilities and what you are looking to do. And THEY make the stick that will get you there.

 

I hear that leetymike. Would shapers be giving beginners SBs though, even fatter ones? That's if you consider grovelers and fish to be in that category. I'm pretty sure that for a while after I started surfing, if I had any conversation with a shaper about him making me a board, I'd have had nothing much to tell him that wouldn't cause him to make me a mid-length and come back when I could do a lot with it. It's only now that I could have any conversation of any meaning with a shaper, and it still would not be that profound. I'd be going more with what they think than what I think still.

Part of knowing anything now about boards is knowing what I'm either not fit to ride or don't like riding, and that's come from trying several different ones through used purchases, trades, rentals, and borrowing. I think the best thing going are stores that have rental demos of most of the boards they sell. Then you don't have to spend a lot to experiment with a lot of different types over time. I don't see a lot of such stores though.
